Your duty here is to create a 5–7 source literature review, one that utilizes full-length articles gleaned from, primarily, SocINDEX with Full-Text and Social Work Reference Center—each published within the last three years. You will begin by collecting 10–12 full-length articles or experimental or statistical studies. This collection process will be ongoing, and I will remind you to keep seeking sources, but you are responsible for starting collection now. 

You will collect the sources, read the sources actively, annotate the sources, create bibliographic entries for the sources, and then you will synthesize the sources into an APA-style literature review.

The OLLU Library’s Social Work Research Starter page is useful, too, as is seeking the assistance of a research librarian. All sources must come from the electronic portal of the OLLU Library, the databases mentioned above, and ebooks available through EBSCO and ProQuest.

We will thoroughly discuss and practice research methods, document collection, active reading, annotation of academic sources, all aspects of APA style, and anything else that comes up.

For a model, we will use Young et al.’s Figure 4.4 (pp. 86–95). The literature review provided is a good example of the social work literature review, in design and in content.

We will also use the sample APA-style document from the Purdue OWL, and we will examine literature review in APA Academic Writer. 

Broadly, the document will be constructed as such:

1. Title Page

2. Abstract Page

3. Literature Review

4. References Page

The Word document should be double spaced, written in Times New Roman, with 1” margins all around. Set the Paragraph After at 0. 

We will discuss paragraph content and structure as we progress—different paragraphs are structured differently and contain different content.

In sections, the literature review will have an introduction section, the review section, a concluding section.

Each source review will contain at least one APA-style in-text citation—a paraphrase, and each source will be placed on the References page with an APA-style bibliographic entry per the source type—journal article, ebook chapter, et cetera.

We will create the document in sections—the APA-style template, the external frame—title page and references page, the internal frame—introduction and conclusion, the annotations, the abstract. Voila. Well, it is not magic; it’s work, but it can be done.
