Performance Based Assessment

  1. Read Burden and Byrd, Chapter 11 and view the “Assessing Learning” powerpoint in the “Learning Activities” folder. What is the purpose of classroom assessments and what is the distinction between the three types of assessments described on page 286-7?
  2. View the video entitled “Comprehensive Assessment”. Based on the video what is a performance based assessment? What are the benefits to using performance based assessment over traditional assessments?
  3. Examine one Smarter Balanced Performance Task provided in your learning activities folder. Identify the task you selected, grade level as well as the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) level required of students to complete the task (located on the task specification chart within the task). What knowledge will students need to be successful with this task? Why do you think that the DOK level was the appropriate level for this task?
