MGSC2301 Individual PROJECT # EXTRA CREDIT Fall, 2015 General Instructions/Information:  Individual Project # EXTRA CREDIT is due on Thursday, December 3.  Individual Project # EXTRA CREDIT will be scored on a 50-point scale. You have sample data, which contain the heights of the male students (in inches) from two independent groups (group 1 and group 2: sections taught by two different professors in Statistics). In addition, each professor measured the heights of his/her students. 1. Referring to the data, calculate sample means, quartiles: Q1, Q2 and Q3, inter-quartile ranges, and sample standard deviations for both groups. (12 points) 2. Referring to the data, graph the histograms (interval width = 3) and box-plots for both groups. (8 points) 3. Referring to the results in part 1 and part 2, compare the distributions of these two groups and draw conclusions. (4 points) 4. Referring to the data, construct 95% confidence intervals for the true means for both groups. Explain the numerical values found in this part. (8 points) 5. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for an adult male in the United States is 69.2 inches. Decide whether or not to reject the null hypothesis (µ = 69.2) in favor of alternative (µ ≠ 69.2) at the level of significance 0.05 for both groups. Show the steps how you perform tests of hypothesis. In the context of the problem specify your final conclusion in words. (8 points) 6. Use the 0.05 level of significance to test whether the difference between the means of these two groups is significant. Explain your reasoning for concluding why or why not. Show the steps how you perform a test of hypothesis. In the context of the problem specify your final conclusion in words. (8 points) 7. Referring to the result in part 6, give a suggestion why there is or why is not a significant difference between the heights of the male students from these two independent groups. (2 points) Type your project with all results and conclusions!
