What makes teachers and schools effective?

After reading Chapters 2 in Ryan and Cooper and the article “The Best Teachers I Have Known” respond to the following:

1.  In the article “The Best Teachers I Have Known” Susan Allred, a retired administrator and teacher,

     shares characteristics of highly effective teachers from an administrator’s perspective. Which of the

     characteristics resonate with you? Why?

2.  In Chapter 2  Ryan & Cooper describe four purposes of schools (intellectual, political and civic,

     economic and social). Which of these four purposes do you believe ought to be given the greatest 

     weight in the organization of schools? Why? How were these four purposes evident in your schooling?

3.  In Chapter 2 of the Ryan and Cooper text the authors describe several characteristics of effective

     schools. Which characteristics do you think are most important? Why?
