Nursing informatics (NI) plays a valuable role in healthcare by integrating nursing science, computer science, and information science. NI enables nurses timely and efficient access to accurate health information through innovations such as the electronic health records (EHR), promoting informed decision-making and improvements in patient health outcomes. With a foundation in evidence-based practice, NI supports patient-centered care, improving patient safety and satisfaction. Following the nursing process, NI emphasizes proficiency in completing assessments to identify gaps and trends in healthcare and developing an improvement plan (Al Najjar & Shafie, 2022).
Nursing informatics affects clinical practice in many ways, both positive and challenging. The ultimate goal of nursing informatics in healthcare is the improvement of healthcare outcomes. Technological innovations in nursing informatics have made it possible to have access to real-time healthcare records and research, which, in turn, reduces the probability of medical errors. However, the interoperability issue may hinder this process and interfere with communication between various systems. Some medical staff may lack competence and resist change; therefore, continuous education and training are required to build proficiency and confidence. Careful budgeting and planning are critical due to the cost of implementing and updating various systems and the potential for cyber-attacks and data breaches (Booth et al., 2021).
Informatics competencies enable nurses to deliver safe, efficient, patient-centered care using evidence-based practices. I want to gain more experience in the application of informatics practices to become a better leader in the future. Machine learning uses algorithms for disease predictions, identification of patterns, reduction of medication errors, robotic surgical assistance, and various other methods to improve patient care outcomes (Kwon et al., 2019). Personalized treatment using clinical decision support systems (CDSS) has been instrumental in improvements in making better health decisions with patients and families. CDSS aims to identify, predict, and recommend treatment for patients in the treatment process. CDSS is a bonus in acknowledging provider expertise while incorporating the system's information for better outcomes (Sutton et al., 2020). Competence in the various informatics domains will provide a foundation for the emergence of leadership qualities essential for quality patient care delivery.
Mom Francoise:
The course "Transforming Nursing and Healthcare through Technology" has provided me with a deep understanding of nursing informatics and its practical applications in my field to enhance patient care. Various topics covered in the course, including professional role development, the crucial role of informatics competencies in improving care quality and safety, informatics frameworks applicable to nursing practice, digital health and wearables, cyber-ethics, and informatic tools, are all interconnected (Kinnunen et al., 2022).
The discussion on "Professional role development" highlighted the importance of nurses being proficient in informatics tools and concepts to fulfill their roles effectively. Understanding key terms in nursing informatics is essential for effective communication and can enhance collaboration and decision-making in my primary care setting.
Reflecting on the course topics, it's evident that nursing informatics significantly contributes to enhancing care quality and safety. It provides a framework for managing and communicating data, information, and knowledge, thereby improving decision-making, communication, and supporting evidence-based practice (Kolla et al., 2021). In my professional practice and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, I intend to apply the knowledge gained to improve patient care and health outcomes. For instance, I plan to utilize digital health wearables to enhance patient monitoring and self-management (Smuck et al., 2021).
Two new informatics competencies I acquired are information and knowledge management and Information Technology (IT) project management. Information and Knowledge Management competency involve effectively gathering, managing, and utilizing information to promote health (Peltonen et al., 2023). In my primary care practice, this could entail organizing patient data for easy access and interpretation, facilitating informed decision-making about patient care.
Health (IT) Project Management competency involves planning, executing, and overseeing health IT projects (Sipes, 2020). This includes tasks like implementing a remote patient monitoring (RPM) glucometer system or overseeing a telehealth program. In a primary care setting, this competency ensures that health IT projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet practice and patient needs.
In my primary care outpatient practice, I plan to integrate these competencies to enhance patient care. I will recommend adopting an RPM glucometer for patients to transmit real-time glucose readings to providers. This will enhance patient engagement in their care and enable timely interventions, ultimately improving patient health outcomes.
Dem Chidinma:
This course “Transforming Nursing and Healthcare through Technology gave me an understanding of the concept of nursing informatics and how it can be applied in my practice area to improve patient care. The different topics discussed throughout the course, such as professional role development, pivotal role of informatics competencies in enhancing the quality of care and safety in nursing practice, informatics frameworks and models applicable to nursing practice, digital health and wearables, cyber-ethics, and informatic tools in nursing practice are all interconnected (Kinnunen et al., 2022). The discussion on “Professional role development” showed that as nurses, we need to be competent in informatics tools and understanding informatics concepts to fulfill our roles effectively. The course also helped in understanding the important terms in nursing informatics which are crucial for effective communication and can enhance collaboration and decision-making in my primary care setting.
Reflecting on the topics discussed throughout the course, it’s clear that nursing informatics plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of care and safety in nursing practice. It provides a framework for managing and communicating data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice, thereby improving decision-making, enhancing communication, and supporting evidence based practice (Kolla et al., 2021). In my professional practice and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, I plan to leverage what I have learned from these topics to improve patient care and health outcomes in practice area. For example, I plan to use digital health wearables to enhance patient monitoring and self- management (Smuck et al., 2021).
The two new informatics competencies that I have learned are information and knowledge management and Information technology (IT) project management. Information and Knowledge Management competency involves the ability to gather, manage, and use information effectively to promote health (Peltonen et al., 2023). In my primary care practice, this could involve organizing patient data in a way that it can be easily accessed and interpreted. This could help in making informed decisions about patient care and ensuring that all relevant information is considered. Health (IT) Project Management competency involves the ability to plan, execute, and oversee health IT projects (Sipes, 2020). This could include anything from implementing a remote patient monitoring (RPM) glucometer system to overseeing a telehealth program. In a primary care practice, this competency could be used to ensure that health IT projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet the needs of the practice and its patients.
In my practice in the primary care outpatient setting, I plan to incorporate these competencies to improve patient care. I will recommend adopting an RPM glucometer for our patients so that their self monitored glucose readings can be transmitted in real time to providers. This will not only enhance patients engagement in their care but will lead to timely intervention which will ultimately improving patients’ health outcomes.
Dem Sylvia:
The American Nurses Association (ANA) defines nursing informatics as the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. This data approach to patient care enhances the clinical experience for health care providers and patients. Nursing informatics is a fast-growing field that plays a vital role in leveraging technology and data to transform health care delivery, enhance patient outcomes, and advance the nursing profession ( What Is Nursing Informatics and Why Is It so Important? | ANA, 2024)This nursing role bridges a health care organization's systems, nursing staff, and providers, including nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives. Incorporating informatics in nursing offers valuable input into how technological systems should be designed and implemented from a nursing perspective ( What Is Nursing Informatics and Why Is It so Important? | ANA, 2024).The contribution of nursing informaticists has helped shape nursing informatics by creating desirable changes in the quality of healthcare through the proper decision-making and promotion of equity through meeting the needs of populations by meeting the needs of the targeted population (Kalsy et al., 2018).
one area where I see nursing informatic very prominent is in nursing education. I remember when covid hit in 2020 and all nursing schools had to be virtual and some schools have remain 50% in person and. 50% in class. studies were done online as well as labs. Nursing informatics is enabling post graduate studies to done successfully online.
Telemedicine is the practice of caring for patients over distance. Its use can be traced as far back as 500 BCE, using human messengers to transfer medical advice and medicine. Over the past few centuries, the sharing of medical information and telemedicine has advanced through innovations such as the printing press, telegraph, telephone, and Internet (Jin et al. 2020) . Health care providers are now able to use technology to deliver healthcare directly to a patient in the comfort of their homes using “live-chats” and video callingRecent technological advances and external pressures have driven telemedicine to the forefront of medical reality (Jin et al. 2020). During an emergency declaration made March 17, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) stated the need for providers to use telemedicine to provide patients care in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other settings across the states. Additionally, new policies have been implemented to better facilitate patient care, safety, and privacy (Jin et al. 2020). The convenience provided by this low resource modality facilitates the intercommunication between physicians and offers a suitable alternative for patients who are medically or socially unable to see providers in person. The most significant and obvious limitations to telemedicine are the lack of vital sign assessment and limited physical exams. Identifying patients who have tools such as a weight scale, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, and thermometer is helpful. These tools are relatively affordable, sometimes covered by insurance companies, and are often already in the home.

Respond to the four colleagues by expanding upon their post or offering an alternative perspective on the influence of leadership in evaluating, maintaining, and sustaining change in an organization. Include 2 references each
Sherica:
Change management consists of strategies and models to help employees accept new organizational development (Phillips & Klein, 2023). The process entails planning, developing, leading, assessing, and sustaining a change implementation process. Conversely, change leadership is the behaviour of direct supervisors, which targets framing and shaping the organizational change and creating the capacity among followers to implement change (Engida et al., 2022). Change leadership behavior generally entails ensuring the need for change, providing the plan and vision, building commitment and support, and monitoring change implementation.
Leadership Approaches and Evaluation of and Sustainment of Change
In healthcare settings or nursing practices, leadership approaches play an important role in evaluating and sustaining change. Leadership approaches such as transformational leadership approaches may serve as teachers' role-model students, foster cooperative goals and objectives, foster confidence and trust among followers, inspire subjects, and motivate followers by encouraging them to reflect on traditional beliefs and practices, effects that may have various effects on the evaluation and sustainment of change in care (Saleem et al., 2022). For instance, given that the leadership approaches can enhance and foster corporative goals, nurses can collectively evaluate a patient fall intervention, providing feedback on the improvement criteria. With regard to change sustainment, leadership approaches may foster confidence and trust among followers. They will thus be willing to embrace any strategic change initiatives that leaders may implement. For example, in implementing patient fall interventions, motivated employees who emerge due to effective leadership approaches are confident and readily lead in implementing the change process introduced by the leaders.
Function of Leadership in Evaluating, Maintaining, and Sustaining Change
The leadership role that helps leaders in evaluating, maintaining, and sustaining change include motivating employees, creating a short and long-term vision for change, communicating the change with the key stakeholders, planning for the change, creating a calm and conducive environment for implementing change, leading by example and getting employees to buy in into the change process (Musaigwa, 2023). These measures and leadership roles help create effective communication among the change leaders and followers, instill trust and confidence among the followers, and motivate others to join the change process. Finally, measuring change in the organization must be a continuous process (Naslund & Norrman, 2019). Having a continuous change measurement system is a way to assess and monitor the present situation and enable change managers to identify flaws between the intended and actual outcomes.
Miriam:
Change management and change leadership are crucial in driving organizational transformation, particularly in a military medical center's healthcare or nursing practice setting. Change management focuses on the structured processes and methodologies for implementing and overseeing change initiatives. It emphasizes planning, organizing resources, and managing stakeholder engagement to ensure successful change adoption. On the other hand, change leadership emphasizes the role of visionary leadership in inspiring and guiding individuals through change. It involves setting a clear vision, fostering innovation, and empowering teams to drive change. (Nilsen et al., 2020)
In the context of a military medical center, leadership approaches are instrumental in evaluating and sustaining change processes. Leaders can leverage strategic leadership techniques to facilitate the assessment of change outcomes and ensure their continuity. Effective leadership involves engaging stakeholders in the evaluation process, including healthcare providers, administrators, and support staff. This engagement fosters buy-in and promotes a collaborative approach to assessing the impact of change initiatives on patient care, operational efficiency, and staff satisfaction (Sfantou et al., 2017).
The function of leadership in evaluating, maintaining, and sustaining change is multifaceted. Leaders play a pivotal role in interpreting evaluation findings, identifying areas for improvement, and making data-driven decisions to optimize change strategies. They provide ongoing support and resources to maintain the momentum of change efforts, address challenges, and reinforce positive behaviors and outcomes. Leadership fosters continuous improvement by promoting adaptive responses to changing circumstances and embedding new practices into organizational norms and values. (Bedard., n.d.)
The influence of leadership on these aims is profound. Effective leadership sets the tone for organizational change by modeling behaviors, inspiring commitment, and aligning stakeholders around common goals. Leaders influence the organizational culture, shaping attitudes and behaviors that support change initiatives. Their strategic vision and communication skills enable them to navigate resistance, promote innovation, and drive sustained improvement (Sfantou et al., 2017).
In measuring change in an organization, it is essential to maintain a strategic approach to evaluation. While the intensity and focus of measurement may evolve, stopping measurement altogether is not advisable. Continuous evaluation allows leaders to track progress, identify emerging issues, and adapt strategies accordingly. For example, in a military medical center implementing a new electronic health record system, ongoing measurement of user satisfaction, system efficiency, and patient outcomes is critical to optimize system performance and address user concerns. Adjusting measurement strategies based on evolving priorities and organizational needs ensures that change efforts remain aligned with strategic objectives and deliver sustainable benefits over time.
Natalia:
Change leadership is the management style emphasizing and encouraging change in an organization, while change leadership promotes initiative change as an opportunity for growth. For example, management requires a process while people require leadership to maintain change. So, when you have change management, you use strategies to implement the change and once you have the process in place it requires leadership to lead the behavior of change on the staff members. For example, Philips and Klein (2023) state that in order for an organization to thrive change must take place. It requires the creation of strategies that increase acceptance of change to reduce the barriers that prevent the change. Change leaders according to Philips and Klein (2023), usually is responsible for planning, developing, leading, assessing, and supporting the implementation change.
Leadership is tasked in moving the organization from one level to the next, they also help the organization to remain relevant by advancing practices, especially in nursing. For example, upon completion of a risk assessment and gap analysis it was noted that nurses were not properly performing point of use treatment to the instruments. This required not only just in time training but strategies to recognize what the barriers are, create a workflow, provide web-based training, and later competencies that relate to this issue. The leaders that are tasked with overseeing the change provide the staff the resources, time, and strategies that will help the transitional change to be seamless, while the process of change is part of the management. In the end, the result is to have better trained nurses that are now providing the proper point of use treatment on devices and instrumentations that are taking to sterile processing. This ensures that there is a decrease of biofilm and bioburden on the equipment that if allowed to fester in the instruments will not allow for proper sterilization to occur. Having this “change” provides maintains patient safety and provides the staff the resources and time to properly perform such an important step. In the end, it leads to reduction or prevention of infection. Once this issue is identified then an assessment has to be conducted with all the units that utilize reusable instruments and devices that must be sent to sterile processing for sterilization. In this case the leadership change ensures that the strategies that are implemented are provided across the entire organization to achieve standardization in the event that nurses cross cover throughout the different departments. In the process, leaders should also be skilled to implement change and be cost effective in the process (Musaigwa, 2023).
For this reason, it is important for an organization to continue measuring change to make sure that the changes align with evidence-based practices and serve the organization goals. Per Mac Carte (2021), organizations need to develop adaptability capacities to survive environmental changes this serves as a guide for internal change within the organization. Therefore, it is my humble opinion that organizations should always measure change and strive for excellence in nursing practice, provide innovative ways to improve practices, and continually monitor changes and improvements.
Linda:
Change management involves processes, tools, and techniques for managing people in an organization. It systematically moves people, teams, and organizations toward their goals (Barrow et al., 2022). Change leadership, on the other hand, motivates people to change. It highlights leaders' responsibility in defining the vision, articulating the need for change, and enabling and encouraging individuals to adopt new attitudes, behaviors, and work styles. While change management provides the foundation, change leadership gives energy, direction, and inspiration for successful transformation.
Change evaluation and sustainability in healthcare organizations and nursing practices depend on effective leadership. Effective change initiatives require a complete plan that links leadership with evaluation, monitoring, and reinforcing procedures. Healthcare leaders can promote continuous improvement, stakeholder buy-in, and organizational change by using transformational, servant, and adaptive leadership styles. For example, transformational leaders motivate followers to embrace change and work toward a shared vision by encouraging open dialogue, feedback, and collaborative problem-solving to identify barriers, refine processes, and make necessary adjustments (Khan et al., 2020). Additionally, servant leaders actively engage with frontline healthcare professionals to acquire ideas, address problems, and provide assistance to patients, staff, and the organization, establishing trust and shared responsibility. Adaptive leaders anticipate and address complex issues, encourage experimentation, and promote a learning mentality, allowing firms to actively evaluate change, make data-driven decisions, and adjust tactics for long-term success.
Organizational change evaluation, maintenance, and sustainability depend on leadership. Effective leaders hold town hall meetings, focus groups, or surveys with staff during the evaluation phase to get input on the implementation process and suggest areas for improvement. They also evaluate the change initiative using patient satisfaction, workflow efficiency, and cost savings. Leadership celebrates fast wins and milestones, honoring teams or people who adopt new techniques, to maintain momentum. They also overcome resistance by coaching, training, or altering processes based on employee feedback. Leaders must integrate new protocols into standard operating procedures (SOPs) performance reviews, and onboarding courses to maintain change. Healthcare executives may integrate evidence-based care pathways into electronic health records to ensure adherence. They encourage staff to suggest and test new patient care and operational efficiency approaches to increase continuous improvement. Leaders may manage and sustain change by integrating stakeholders, employing data-driven decision-making, reinforcing preferred behaviors, and fostering adaptation.
The influence of leadership on evaluating, maintaining, and sustaining change within an organization is profound and multi-faceted. Leaders inspire, motivate, and guide their teams throughout change projects, ensuring their success. They aggressively involve stakeholders in progress and impact evaluation, transparent communication, data analysis, and continual improvement. For instance, to identify areas for improvement or celebrate triumphs, a healthcare leader deploying a new electronic health record system may perform frequent staff surveys, assess patient satisfaction scores, and analyze workflow efficiency metrics. Leaders also recognize lean manufacturing teams and provide focused training to those that oppose (Jerab & Mabrouk, 2023). For change to last, leaders must integrate new customer service norms into staff onboarding and performance reviews. Regarding measuring change, it is essential to continue doing so, as ongoing assessment identifies emerging challenges, prevents reversion to old practices, and ensures the effectiveness of initiatives. Without continuous measurement, organizations risk losing sight of goals and failing to address issues.
