1. Chapter 2 mentions aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has been around for centuries and this practice has been documented back to ancient Egypt, where individuals burned herbs, oils, and wood to promote health and heal the sick. As time progressed, new herbs and spices were identified and their uses have been passed down for centuries.
In addition to the suggested medicinal properties, research has studied the ability of scents to alter our emotions. Interestingly, retailers fill their stores with a specific scent profile in hopes to increase sales, again it alters our emotions or evokes a memory. It can be a citrus scent to energize shoppers, a seasonal profile, or lavender to relax. Surprisingly, this works!
2. CAM started back in the 4th century B.C with Hippocrates, who is known as 'the father of medicine'. He insisted on the healing power of nature and believed that the patients should be encouraged to develop the body self-healing efforts through exposure to the natural environment. Other early physicians also developed the interest to actively step in to correct the illnesses through the development of other CAM methods. In the 1970s, CAM practices became widespread and the western medical establishment labeled such practices as 'irregular medicine. Over time, the practices have been increasingly used and resulting in the better outcome of the diseases.
3. The difference between complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine is complementary medicine is used with mainstream medical care. an example would be acupuncture which helps with the side effects of cancer treatment. when medical providers use both types of care it is called integrative medicine and alternative medicine is not part of standard medical practices like drinking green tea, tai chi, and massage and is not recognized by the medical community.
4. Health care in the United States as mention in this chapter have become overall expensive here in the US. I myself have to say that I agree with this statement just for my husband and I we were paying almost $4oo dollars. The sad part that even if that cover for the health insurance, vision and dental, there were times we still had to pay out of pocket expenses that were said not to be covered. Another part that also caught my attention in the section was the amount of people dealing daily with stress. In this chapter it mentioned that about," 80% of all health care issues are accounted as stress in the United States" horrible. It almost seems that the prices for health care are continuing to go up instead of down, which is why I think so many people tend to go find an alternative route.
