Discussion
This week's reading deals with cryptography, cryptographic algorythms, and the types of attacks they might be susceptible to. Respond to the following questions, and then respond to at least two other posts.
- Do some research on the cost of obtaining a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. Research which Certification Authorities (CAs) are the most secure, and the most user friendly. For example, will an administrator need to reinstall certificates each year if they purchase a certificate that expires annually?. Additionally, research which CAs have been recently compromised. What would you need to do if you were using a certificate from a CA that had recently been compromised?
- What encryption have you used personally? For example, many Mac OSX users have utilized AES in securing their home folders. Additionally, you've most certainly used SSL while browsing secured websites. Do you even realize when you are using a secured connection? Would you notice if a connection was not secured when it should be? What could you do to rectify this? If you've ever set up encryption on some kind of connection profesionally, what kind of connection was it, what kind of encryption was it, and why did you use this type of security?
