Individual Discussion Board Questions:

1.) Assume that your research study will be quantitative in nature.  Considering the potential responses to your questions, develop a  numerical coding scheme (i.e., create a numerical code book) for each of  your prospective variables. What are some of the issues that you will  need to consider? What are the benefits of this particular coding  scheme?

2.) Babbie argues that there are three specific measures of central  tendency: the mean, the median, and the mode. Compare and contrast these  three measures of central tendency. Now, consider the following series  of numbers:

1, 4, 1, 6, 8, 3, 5, 1, 1, 6, 9, 5, 9, 7, 2, 8, 9, 3, 6

Calculate the mean, median, and mode for this list. Show your work where appropriate. What is the range for the above series?

3.) What’s the difference between a discrete variable and a  continuous variable? Is it appropriate to calculate a mean for variables  that have been scaled at the ordinal or nominal level? Why or why not?

4.) What’s the difference between a suppressor variable and a  distorter variable? How might such variables impact your particular  study? What potential suppressor and distorter variables might you need  to consider?
