DB #2 Sociology

Instructions: Find a newspaper article, online or physical paper, and identify the structural functionalist, social conflict, and symbolic interactionstic view of the social issue that is discussed in the article. Think about how each of these perspectives view society. You can get this from your reading of the text. For example, structural functionalists view society as social harmony with a high degree of social order with the institutions meeting their manifest and latent functions, all for the good of society.  Please follow this same format for structural functional and social conflict theories. 

•           Write at least 1 paragraph summarizing your article, please put it into your own words.

•           Write at least 3 paragraphs explaining why the article you found represents the theoretical perspectives, ideally one paragraph per theory.

Provide support for your opinion. Do not forget to respond to your classmates.

Grading Criteria:

Failure to post your initial response to the question by Wednesday, August 28 at 5:00 pm will result in -10 points per day for each day after. For instance if you make you main post on Sunday, and respond to two classmates with all of the requirements met, the highest grade that you can earn is a 70 for that particular discussion board.

Quality primary input-Your initial post will count as 80%.  Primary input should be  thorough and direct and posted no later than Thursday. Quality primary input should be complete, thoughtful, and well-developed responses that are substantive and may contain specific text references.  Students should refrain from personal opinions unless it is based upon objective facts. It must be detailed; at least two paragraphs (5-7 sentences each). If there is more than one part to a question, you must answer all parts of the question.

Quality secondary input (responses to classmates input) -You must respond to at least 2 others classmates(10 points each).  You should add to the discussion or invite further discussion by raising a contrasting idea, praising a specific portion of a classmate's answer or offering another perspective. Repeating your classmates post or responding, "Good answer" or "Great job" or "I agree" will not be counted as a response. The deadline for completion of this assignment is August 30 at 5:00 pm.
