Go Phish Assignment

THIS IS THE FIRST PART OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT (The “PHISHING EMAIL). HERE IS

AN EXAMPLE (the red text is important/pertinent info for you):

From: FIUIT ( [email protected]) Remember, you need to have where it looks like it’s coming from, as well as the *actual* address. It is very common in phishing attempts to have the email come from gmail or have a unique extension, such as “.info” instead of .com, .edu, .gov, etc.

To: Faculty Listserv This would be your target(s)

Subject: IMPORTANT NOTICE (has to be catchy or no one will click the email)

Body: This is your “sell.” You need to write a short but threatening enough email so that people feel they have no choice but to click the link and give the information to the hacker (in this case, that would be you).

Dear Faculty,

We are aware of the major infiltration of our network here at FIUU and are very sad to tell you that all of your logon info is compromised. Kindly, click the link below to enter your credentials so that you may create a new account. If you do not click the link within 24 hours, your personal information will no longer be in the system and you will not be paid. Please act fast.

www.fiu.com/faculty_credential_update - This is the link I have created. You need to create one for yourself that, again, looks real. However, you would notice that it is “fiu.com” and not “fiu.edu.”

Reagrds, - Notice the spelling issues. These are also good signs that the email is a phishing attempt.

FIU

This is the second part of your assignment. You need to address the questions outlined for you in the syllabus and under the assignment itself (they are the same, but you can look at either to see what you need to address). Remember, this portion can be double-spaced, but you need to answer each question satisfactorily. Please do not give me one sentence for why you think a certain group would be more likely to fall prey to your phishing attempt. Go into detail, do some

research (if needed). ABOVE ALL ELSE, DO NOT COPY A PHISHING ATTEMPT FROM THE WEB. Your assignments are checked for plagiarism (this includes information taken from the web). Get creative and have fun!
