YOUR BEHAVIORAL PROFILE

—Douglas R. Kelley, PhD, CH, CSL

Upon Completion of this Segment, You Will Know:

 Your Behavioral Profile.

Behavior is a mirror in which everyone displays his own image. — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

hile you cannot categorize human behavior, you can get an idea of general behavioral

types with profiles such as the one you will soon complete. Behavioral profiles are de-

signed to teach you more about yourself and others as well as give you a starting point

for personal and professional growth. Moreover, each different profile you complete tells you some-

thing different about yourself and adds to your knowledge base. Therefore, any behavioral profile is

simply a tool for personal growth and cannot serve as any type of definitive or complete description

of any particular individual’s psychological makeup. I will say it again: Behavioral Profiles are tools

for personal growth; nothing more, nothing less. They are not intended to “label people” or “put

people in a box.” They are meant to make one think.

Profiles are also a great way to learn more about human nature, and there are many available

such as the Myers-Briggs. If you understand the differences in people, you’ll better understand their

motivations. We all know the “Golden Rule,” which traces its origins to thousands of years before

Christ. The Golden Rule states, “Treat others like you want to be treated.” When it comes to showing

honor and respect to others, the Golden Rule certainly applies. However, it does not apply in other

areas because not everyone is the same and, therefore, not everyone necessarily wants to be treated

the same as us. This point was well-made in Dr. Tony Alessandra’s book, The Platinum Rule.1 The

Platinum Rule states, “Treat others like they want to be treated.”

After you complete the IMHS Behavioral Profile below, you will discover more about your own

behavioral traits. Be sure to read the characteristics section as well as how to interpret your profile.

Keep friends and family in mind as you complete the profile to also get a better idea of their behav-

ioral types as well.
