Assignment: Write a thorough article (news or opinion) appropriate for publication in a newspaper (paper or on-line) or magazine (print or on-line) focused on some facet of gun control in United States and all of its related topics. This is a very broad topic; you will need to narrow your topic significantly.

Some possible specific topics might include, but are not limited to: 

• gun manufacturing in United States
• gun lobbying and the NRA
• specific tragedies from mass gun shootings
• gun deaths and injuries each year in United States and globally
• weapons of war: semi-automatic weapons/bump stocks/automatic weapons in relationship to death and injury
• state and federal legislation centering on gun control
• polls and public opinion of gun control laws
• news and media coverage of gun violence
• video games, films, television centering on weapons of war and impact on audiences
• selective exposure and news coverage of the Douglas High School tragedy in particular

Your news or magazine article should contain the following: an appropriate headline for the medium in which it is to be published, an appropriate lead paragraph, direct quotes from those mentioned in your article (you may use primary or secondary source quotes), if it is commentary, it should be clearly marked as “Commentary,” appropriate grammar and paragraphing, at least one (up to three acceptable) photograph with cut line and source/copyright, links for further reading by the reader.

The length of the article may depend on where you determine it should be published, however, I would suggest a minimum of 500 words to 1000 words. Use the course textbook News Writing and Reporting  and AP Style book as resources, if necessary, if you have questions about grammar, punctuation, quotations, and other relayed writing issues.

Due date March 8, 2018. Upload on TurnItIn on our iCollege course web page. I suggest you produce the article in Word, make a PDF, upload by March 8.
