PSY 121: Developmental Psychology Learning Unit 10: Assignment
Late Adulthood: The Interview
SLO: Analyze biological, cognitive, and socioemotional developmental processes for late adulthood,
apply developmental psychological content to real-life situations to include individual differences,
beliefs, values, and interpersonal relationships, and develop critical thinking skills.
For this assignment, you are to choose someone to interview that is older than 70 years young. This
may be a grandparent, parent, friend, or other social acquaintance. You are to create 12 open-ended
questions based on your learning from the entire course. Your detailed questions will help you dive
deep into the topics of one’s life and must include questions directed at each stage of
development. Meaning-questions should cover topics throughout one’s life and not all directed to a
specific stage of development (ex. toddler years, thoughts on dating, historical events that may have
influenced their lives, adolescent memories, marriage expectations, empty nesting, late adulthood
health concerns, work stress, thoughts on death, etc.). Plan to interview this individual for about 35 to
60 minutes. Make sure you have your questions written out in advance and let this person know the
interview timeframe. Also, be sure to conduct your interview following professional and ethical
principles.
Once you complete your interview, you are to compose an essay that lists your questions and
responses. Use only limited direct quotes from your interviewee or paraphrase their responses. Finally,
you are to provide insight to your learning from this individual about the developmental
process. What did you learn about human development over the lifespan? What areas of physical,
cognitive, social, and emotional development stood out to you as you conducted your interview? Your
insight should be detail and specific. There is not a specific page number for this assignment but it must
be detailed and thorough.
Follow the instructions for this assignment carefully. Use your text and any scholarly outside resources
needed. Make sure to add a title page and reference page to your essay.
