Art Show Review Essay (at least. 500 words, double spaced)
100 Points Go to a visual art exhibition at a museum or gallery near you. Colleges & universities often have art exhibitions on campus. Larger cities have free art openings, usually on Friday night. Check your newspaper. This must be an actual, not a virtual exhibition. (Note: The Thomas Kincaid galleries are not acceptable for this assignment) Look at the whole show and give your overall impression of the show. Does the show have a theme? What kind of work does it include? Choose a piece or two to describe. Did you like the work? Why or why not? Which pieces were particularly meaningful? Include the name of the name of the location and the date you visited. Do not quote from the brochure or wall information cards. Use only your own words. Including photos is not necessary and just makes the file so large it it difficult to upload. Points will be deducted for spelling/grammar errors, lack of enough words and not double spaced.

A part of this assignment is for you to find locations displaying visual art near where you live. You will recieve a 0 if it is not an art exhibit. Discovery Park of America is NOT an art museum. Many museums are dedicated to history or science. You will get a 0 if you do not go to an ART exhibit.

Essay 1

I have had the privilege of viewing different art exhibits at the campus of Dyersburg State Community College. I enjoyed the clown paintings and thought I would be writing on them. Then on Tuesday April 23, 2013 I walked through and was taken aback by the exhibit of photos and paintings displayed. I didn’t see any postings but believe the theme had to be about places in this area. These artworks brought old memories from my childhood flooding into my mind. There was only a small collection, but I know I have already been through them on three different occasions and want to go again.

There was one picture of an old farm house that reminded me so much of the old house my family lived in through my grade school years. The piece was titled Mississippi Blues.  It looked just like the old farmhouse next to the Mighty Mississippi River behind Sheep Ridge, in Lake County. It brought back great memories of the tough but simpler times when you just wanted to get chores done so you could go down to the riverbank and fish.  Could you imagine trying to get an eleven year old to spend his summer chopping cotton, or holding a hog down while your father castrates it today?

There were also two pieces titled Long Sought Pond and Cullen’s Basin that reminded me of my teenage years, which were spent on Reelfoot Lake. They reminded me of great times spent working at Gooch’s Boat Dock and off days spent fishing. I can remember being at the exact spot in the basin picture. There were some beautiful warm days spent there fishing. We didn’t have a care in the world. The art just reminded me of times when life wasn’t so fast paced.

The paintings that were sitting beside photographs of the same subject actually made the photos look dull. With the way the painters used their colors and depths the paintings actually looked more like real life. Looking at the paintings, you felt like you were really there. These artists, to me, have some great talents.

I truly loved this exhibit, if for nothing else, just for the fact it has captured times and places in lives we can never get back. It is my belief that this is what art is truly for. I think it is to bring out emotions and feelings in people, the same way this exhibit did in me. I could relate to every picture displayed. I have actually seen some of them. I would recommend to anyone, from this area especially, that hasn’t had the pleasure of seeing this display, to do so. This exhibit is without a doubt well worth the time. I am one that really doesn’t get art but displays such as this have meaning. This exhibit I can relate to.

I visited a art center for visual arts as i was coming through nashville this weekend. I dont know if many people would be able to appreciate the art show that i saw. There were 68 different artists and about ten different themes. There were some like romantisim and realism, impressionism, forces of nature, modern life, the city, memory and identity. This was like a fifty year art collection that started probly around 1910. There was this one painting I really enjoyed that was a civil war painting of battle grounds with grousom blood. It was almost as if i was there it seemed so real to me. The colors were amazing and stood out more in this painting than in any other to me. I really enjoyed this art center and plan to stop back in next time I go through.

Essay 3 0 This is not an art museum

I went and viewed the Tipton County Museum on Tuesday, November 29th. It is a Veterans Memorial, but it also is a Nature Center. There is about twenty-two acres of beautiful land there. The art pieces that were there was a lot of civil war art, but there is also a lot of nature pieces as well. The Nature Art was probably my favorite, seeing the butterflies and the type of leaves and wildlife. It reminds me of when I was little and everything was well in the world. Chasing butterflies and sitting on the concrete outside and picking up leaves and just sitting there picking them apart. There is nothing better than that. Not having a care in the world like when you were young. You seem to take all that for granted when you are young because you don’t know what kind of responsibilities you will have when you get older. Seeing these pieces made me want to go back in time and enjoy those moments just one more time. I sometimes get to see my daughter enjoy picking apart a leaf and chasing a butterfly and I just smile because all is well in the world in her mind as it should be. 

There are also many pieces of art about the civil war. There is as a lot of fallen soldiers from the civil war that many people forget about when there is war. My favorite pieces were all the personal photos of the soldiers, a uniform, and a soldier’s trumpet. I have never had to have the experience of someone personal to me having to go to war, but I can only imagine what it could be like. The pain and suffering from having to be away from your loved one and not knowing if they are going to come back or not. Scary feeling! These pieces of art really touched my heart on an emotional level. I hope when others visit the Tipton County Museum they appreciate everything the Civil War soldiers did for us, but also be thankful for all the military personal we have today. 

The art I went to see was a very wonderful exhibit to go see. It made me feel happy with the thought of being a child and not having a care in the world. The old civil war pieces made me feel thankful and sad all at the same time. Many people walk by art like this and don’t think much of it. Many people may not even see it as art. I hope that more people take the time to go visit the Tipton County Museum to view these exhibits and see all the beautiful nature they have. Life is short. Enjoy chasing those butterflies and be thankful for the people you have in your life.
