Final Research Project – 30% of course grade Due Week 7 in Assignments by Tuesday, 11:59pm As you have learned throughout this course, medical anthropology has applications for helping to address health issues from many different viewpoints. For this assignment you will be asked to help the CDC plan for the next big pandemic. As we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, there were many changes in our cultural behaviors that we were expected to adapt to in a short time as the world came to a standstill. Some examples included social distancing, frequent hand washing and disinfection, quarantining, mask and glove wearing, and remote work and school. Some of these changes were very hard for people to accept and adhere to, which may have caused these measures to not be as effective as they should have been. Additionally, some people experienced stigma due to the ways that some of the media reported on the pandemic. Therefore, the CDC has decided to hire a medical anthropologist to consult with them on these types of issues in preparation for the next pandemic. For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation to help explain what medical anthropology is, and why it will be useful for the next pandemic. You will use COVID-19 as an example of what could have been done to address some of the issues that came about and discuss what can be done in the future. You should provide the following information in your PowerPoint presentation: 1. An introduction that provides an overview of medical anthropology 2. A discussion of three major medical anthropological concepts from the learning resources that demonstrate the relevance of medical anthropology to addressing a pandemic. 3. A discussion of two problems that came about due to cultural changes or stigmatization that occurred with COVID-19, and how a medical anthropologist could have addressed them. 4. A short research plan that an anthropologist would use to explore two additional problems that could arise in the next pandemic (make sure these are different from the ones you used in your COVID-19 example). You should include relevant research methods; theories or concepts from the learning materials that could apply; and the type of data you would need to learn more about the causes and effects of the problem. 5. Your presentation should conclude with a summary of the points you made and a convincing argument that wraps up why a medical anthropologist should consult with the CDC on the next pandemic. Instructions for creating your Presentation You have two options for this assignment: 1. A PowerPoint/Google slides presentation with a script that would take approximately 5-8 minutes to go through. The script should be submitted as a separate Word document. 2. A 5-8 minute audio or video recorded PowerPoint/Google slides presentation. The presentation should include 7-10 slides (including a reference slide at the end). On each slide there should be a brief summary or a bulleted list of the main points you are trying to make (you can also include a relevant photo or other graphic to make it more visually pleasing). The bulk of your discussion should be in the Word document script, or your recorded script. You should indicate which slide each part of the script goes with. You can think of the slide itself as the summary of what you are going to say, and the script as what you would read as you are presenting. Therefore, the script should be in-depth and include all the detailed research information (with citations) you would want to say as if you were presenting. See the attached resource for tips on creating presentations. |
