In modern-day health systems with increasing complexity, workforce stress levels and high patient acuity, the engagement in leadership is critical to maintain quality and safety. An authentic leader goes beyond management through control from above with inspiration-based leadership which is based on collaboration, flexibility and responsibility. These types of leaders are emotionally intelligent, attuned, ethical, create safe environments for team members to be present and be part of their teams. According to Shirey et al. (2022), involved nurse leaders enhance organizational resilience and enhance team performance, by creating a climate of trust and inclusive communication.

In settings where interprofessional coordination is essential for safe patient care delivery, this leadership attitude facilitates enhanced patient outcomes. Collaboration between providers is critical in improving service delivery in healthcare. Interprofessional collaboration facilitates inter-discipline communication, reduces cross-departmental redundancy of care, and further develops patient-centered coordination (Reeves et al., 2022). Better outcomes and fewer preventable mistakes result from professionals acting on the job of nurses, doctors, pharmacists, social workers and others.

In addition, nursing scholarship has expanded even further than it is limited to direct clinical care; nursing scholarship is enriched through cooperation as a method of interdisciplinary research, quality assurance, and policy discussion. Through interdisciplinary investigation, the practice of advanced practice nurses contribute to the creation of more holistic and context-specific evidence-based interventions.

In practice positions on the spectrum, DNP-prepared nurses are systems leaders who are in the “space between the field and the organization” as clinical experts and organization strategists. They are well-suited to translating evidence into practice, interpreting and evaluating results, calling for patient-centered innovations and efforts. The revised AACN (2021) Essentials highlight leadership, systems-based practice, and interprofessional partnerships as core competencies for doctoral-prepared nurses. In this particular area, that fully engaged leadership connects to Domain 6 in relation to Interprofessional partnerships, collaborative and shared accountability, and Domain 7 around systems-based practice focusing on improving healthcare systems through quality and safety initiatives.

The discussion for this week utilized important DNP Domains such as Domain 2 (Person-Centered Care), Domain 4 (Scholarship for Nursing Practice), Domain 6 (Interprofessional Partnerships), and Domain 7 (Systems-Based Practice) (AACN, 2021). It showcased application of systems thinking and integration of evidence by examining the role collaboration leadership can play in pushing to improve patient outcomes. It also underscored a DNP-prepared nurse’s role in implementing partnering, addressing individual and population health outcomes. Competencies in Leadership Role this week included Strategic Communication, Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Systems-Level Analysis and Implementation and Evidence-Based Leadership Integration. Engagement in this dialogue enhanced the capacity of linking academic evidence to the development of leadership practice. Ultimately, the principles of collaborative leadership help to improve the delivery of healthcare services, develop nursing scholarship, and enable advanced practice nurses to be agents of change in complex healthcare systems.
