Then, watch the media segment What We Learn Before We’re Born (Paul, 2011) and consider how harmful risk factors can affect a baby while in the amniotic sac. Select one of the following risk factors and conduct additional research to learn how it can affect healthy language acquisition and development. Last, locate one credible website that could be a resource for parents and educators.
• Drug/alcohol exposure
• Smoking
• Genetic/chromosomal conditions (e.g., fragile X syndrome, Turner syndrome, Pierre Robin syndrome, cri du chat syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and DiGeorge syndrome)
• Metabolic disorders (e.g., phenylketonuria, or PKU; thyroid disorders; Hunter syndrome; and Hurler syndrome)
• Unhealthy prenatal environmental factors, such as inadequate nutrition

Identify the prenatal risk factor you have selected and explain at least two effects it may have on language acquisition and development. Describe any questions you might still have about this risk factor and/or what you would like to learn more about.
