COMM 3350: Relational Communication Exam 1
Answer each question fully. The suggested page lengths are approximations; your responses may be slightly shorter or longer, but if they are significantly shorter, you have most likely not answered the question in its entirety.
You MUST cite your sources in this exam, and they must be cited correctly; you have a resource on D2L and I expect that you will use it. For some responses, you may draw from multiple weeks of readings; for others, you may only use one week--use your best judgment for which pieces best answer the question. This is NOT an opportunity for your to share your opinion, and you should NOT incorporate your Eleanor book into this exam. I am looking for responses that are supported by research. You should attempt to draw most of your information from the results of each reading, not the literature review or the method (unless you are making an argument that has to do with the legitimacy of the findings that you feel is questionable due to the method).
When you write your responses, please put the number of the question you are answering, but do not retype the question. The exam is due at the beginning of class on the date listed on the syllabus. You will not have class during the session immediately preceding the due date so that you can work on the exam. I will hold “office hours” for you during our regularly scheduled classtime; they are drop-in at my office.
1. Differentiate between social isolation and loneliness. Does social isolation always lead to loneliness? Why or why not? Be sure to fully define social isolation and the types of loneliness that we may experience. (1 to 1.5 pages; 10 points)
2. Based on your readings, what have you learned about friendship relationships? What sort of things do friends do? (Hint: for this question, you will likely draw from more than one reading; 2 to 2.5 pages; 15 points)
3. Consider how we react to individuals’ presence on social media. What types of posts are most likely to strike us as annoying (or, put differently, to make us perceive the poster as less socially attractive)? What are the mechanisms through which we make these evaluations? (Hint: be very specific as to the mechanisms and the variables that are important here; 2 to 2.5 pages; 15 points)
4. Why did researchers believe that friends might not experience conflict? Based on your readings, do you believe that friends experience conflict (Hint: there might be some methodological issues that inform your response)? What are the topics that commonly lead to conflict? (1.5 to 2 pages; 10 points)
