Current Challenges Facing Women and Girls in India

Gender-Based Violence: Over one-third of women in India experience physical or sexual violence. This includes domestic violence, sexual harassment, and assault, which are pervasive issues that many women face daily.

Educational Barriers: Despite progress, 29% of girls in India are still not enrolled in secondary school. Factors such as poverty, cultural norms, and safety concerns contribute to high dropout rates among girls.

Workplace Discrimination: Women earn 19% less than men for the same work. Additionally, women are underrepresented in leadership positions and often face barriers to career advancement.

Health Inequities: Women and girls often have less access to healthcare services, leading to higher rates of maternal mortality and other health issues.

Cultural Norms and Practices: Deeply entrenched patriarchal views and traditions restrict women’s freedom and opportunities, affecting their ability to make decisions about their own lives.

Examples of Sexism in India

Unequal Pay: Women are often paid less than men for the same job, contributing to economic disparity. This economic inequality limits women’s financial independence and reinforces their dependence on male family members.

Domestic Violence: Many women face domestic violence with limited legal recourse. This violence not only causes physical and emotional harm but also restricts women’s ability to participate fully in society.

Cultural Norms: Traditional gender roles often restrict women’s freedom and opportunities. For example, the expectation that women should prioritize household duties over education or careers limits their personal and professional growth.

Further Examples of Sexism and Their Impact

Son Preference: Cultural preference for sons over daughters leads to practices like sex-selective abortion and neglect of girl children. This results in skewed sex ratios and reinforces the notion that girls are less valuable than boys.

Limited Mobility: Social norms often restrict women’s mobility, limiting their access to education, employment, and healthcare. This restriction on movement further entrenches gender inequality and limits women’s opportunities.

Political Underrepresentation: Women are significantly underrepresented in political positions, which limits their influence on policies that affect their lives. This lack of representation perpetuates a cycle of inequality and limits progress towards gender equality.

Initiatives to Remedy Sexism

Government Programs: The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign aims to improve child-sex ratios and promote girls’ education. This initiative focuses on changing societal attitudes towards girls and ensuring their access to education.

NGO Efforts: Organizations like SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association) work to empower women economically. SEWA provides training, support, and resources to help women become financially independent.

Legal Reforms: Recent laws have been enacted to protect women from domestic violence and workplace harassment. These legal measures aim to provide women with safer environments and greater legal recourse against discrimination and violence.
