Pathophysiology?
Children with ADHD may have trouble
paying attention, controlling impulsive
behaviors (may act without thinking about
what the result will be), or be overly active.
People with ADHD may also have trouble
focusing their attention on a single task or
sitting still for long periods. Both adults and
children can have ADHD. ADHD often begins
in childhood and can persist into adulthood.
It may contribute to low self-esteem,
troubled relationships, and difficulty at
school or work. The cause(s) and risk factors
for ADHD are unknown, but current
research shows that genetics plays an
important role. Recent studies of twins link
genes with ADHD. In addition to genetics,
scientists are studying other possible causes
and risk factors including Brain injury
(Martin, 2012). ADHD is usually diagnosed
in school-aged children, but it can continue
to cause problems into adulthood. About
two-thirds of people living with ADHD
continue to experience symptoms as an
adult. ,
