Identify the psychodynamic theory you chose and briefly describe the study that included
the theory. Then, explain how the psychodynamic theory was incorporated in the study. Be
sure to include whether the research supported the theory, further informed theory, or did
not support the theory.
Sigmund Freud developed the ego-defense mechanism notion as part of his
psychoanalytical personality theory. Freud divided the mind into the id, ego, as well as superego.
The id houses sexual and violent desires, according to him. The superego is the moral compass,
and the ego may balance the id and superego. The ego decides whether to include the id as well
as superego in a normal mind. Freud's ego-defense mechanism idea is a collection of
unconscious psychological methods 'used to shield oneself from unpleasant guilt or discomfort'
Anna Freud subsequently developed 10 mechanisms. Five mechanisms are prevalent.
Repression, regression, projection, reaction creation, sublimation.
Layman as well as her colleagues at Ohio University studied women who recognize
being raped vs those who don't or think there was a consent misinterpretation and their recovery
techniques. Victims of rape utilize avoidance and repression to cope. 39-65 individuals per ten
sessions were administered the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES), Defense Mechanism
Inventory (DMI), and other measures to understand identified and unacknowledged victims. The
poll didn't include rape to avoid prejudice. "Have you had sexual relations when you didn't want
to because a guy threatened or physically forced you?" The poll questions were based on Ohio's
legal definition of rape: vaginal, oral, or anal intercourse using force, threat of force, or drugs to
lessen victims' resistance. Along with the SES, the group studied the participants' experience.
Many rape survivors experienced PTSD, according to the research. Repeatedly assaulted women
used denial and dissociative defenses. Even though many of the women had PTSD and other

defensive mechanisms, the research was about to validate their results and prove that it wasn't a
role in their perceiving their attack as rape.
This research employed the ego-defense mechanism hypothesis to determine whether
unrecognized rape victims felt denial, regression, or another kind of protection. The research
found that defensive mechanisms didn't affect the women's reactions. The results encouraged
additional research to aid women in similar circumstances.
