Upon completing my self-assessment I do in fact believe I have the emotional intelligence
to be a successful leader. I think part of being a successful leader is being able to pick
up on emotions changing and different personalities, although this is two things on a list
long of skills it's important to have some of these features as being a leader involves
having self-awareness of others. In my time of being in a work place I have so many
leaders who fail to have emotional intelligence as a skill. Many of my current leaders I
have on my team really lack some of these skills like having empathy and self-awareness
for others feelings. These skills are extremely portable as you can take it to many
different careers. After doing my self-assessment I believe that I would be able to be a
successful leader in the future. I would know how to be emotionally connected to my
employees I would take there concerns and feelings into consideration. There are a lot of
big companies that are out there that do not care about how their employees are treated
all they care about is the money. If I was to ever start my own business that is something
no one would ever have to worry about. At my last job the managers were not very good
at all. They always said they were there if you needed anything and they would always
help if you needed them to but when the time came, they were never there and they did
not care if the store was ready when it was time to open. There were many times when
I would go to them and tell them that I needed help because I had so much to do that
my section would not be ready in time and they would just say ok do what you can.
When I would ask for them to send someone over to help, they always said they didn’t
have anyone. When other workers would ask, they always had someone available to send
over the managers had favorites and only wanted to help them. I believe that the skills to
be a leader are very important and play a big part in the type of leader you will become
one day. actually did score well on the self-assessment, however based on my own
personal experience, I would consider myself an "effective enough" type leader. I have
led and still lead in different arenas. I assume a leadership role in my home life with kids
and wife. I assume a leadership role while coaching youth sports. I also assume a
leadership in a work environment as I'm leading projects.
-At home, I see myself somewhat forced into this role with my family and it's not a bad
thing. This is great because having children and getting married has taught me that
leading isn't easy or rewarding (to the leader) most of the time. In this environment,
though, there is no giving up because your family depends on you.
-Coaching youth sports requires leadership skills because the young lives being touched
might carry some of the skill learned today, with them for the rest of their lives. Trying
to lay a blueprint of sportsmanship, trusting teammates, and teaching a "what you put in
to what, is what you'll get out of it" mentality is key to me. I must practice this myself
for the kids to believe and know it's true.
-While in the work environment I've been fortunate enough to lead many projects. In
project management, there are different techniques or methods to determine the scope,
work efforts, implementation, etc, etc. In this area, I generally lead based on the group
needs. I'm given a desired state. So, the group has decided they have "ABC" but they
want "aBcLT" Because there are so many chance the group may want to stop at any other
letters they didn't call out originally, I'm there to remind them of the initial goal and help
guide them that goal in whatever time they said it should take. So, my main function here
is to keep the group on track to and remind their leader of the ultimate target. Yes, after
going through the results presented by my self assessment test, I believe that I can prove
to be a great leader with high level of emotional intelligence to handle and manage the
employees and regulate my own emotions . After a critical analysts of the self assessment
exercise my score on all attributes falls between 9 and 10 which makes me a person with
good amount of emotional intelligence if judged on these attributes mentioned above viz,
self awareness, self management, empathy, social skills, and motivator. I score 9 on self
management which means that I can control my caprices, whims and desires and focus
my energy on aspects and activities which are significantly important for me. I can
regulate my emotions very well as I score 9 on self awareness. Moreover my score in
other attributes is also satisfactory enough to make me an emotionally intelligent person
The traits viz conscientiousness, agree ability, self awareness and socializing/ extroversion
are the important skills from the above mentioned components that will assist and support
me in being a more inclusive leader. These traits will help me to maintain a healthy
relationship with my followers or employees . These trait will help me to regulate and
modify the behavior of employees by resonating with their problems and issues which
helps to develop an understanding with them and hence assists in becoming an inclusive
leader.
Yes, in my past experience I have worked understand various leaders and after analysis I
found a common trait in all of them which made them a bad leader. This trait was their
inability to understand the needs and desires of followers due to which they failed to gain
the commitment and support from their followers. They failed to create an inclusive
leadership environment due to failure to create a sense of belonging among their
followers. This attribute was also a indication of their weak emotional intelligence ability.
The skills associated with being an inclusive leader are quite portable as it just requires
the efforts and time of leader to listen to their followers, allow them to express
themselves, share their feedback and fulfill their desires by identifying them through their
behavior. Being a inclusive leader calls for having a good amount of interpersonal and
motivational skills to maintain a good relationship with followers. I can't say that this
assessment kind of made me question a few things as far as the point of saying that I
ranked high and emotional intelligence and leadership. The reason that I don't fully agree
with the assessment is that when it comes to social encounters I struggle in those areas
because I have social anxiety. If it is a large group I will pull myself back and stay off
to the side line especially smaller groups I have a smaller standoff personality. Even with
having social anxiety I find myself capable of still reacting and solving high stressed
issues and obligations. Portable and non portable skills I think are important because
when showing or teaching and leading somebody on how to do something it is easier to
know what you're doing and understand. And I also think that when it comes to leading
somebody for whichever reason or why you lead someone it brings you to a level where
they can relate to you and you can relate to them which then just builds on many other
aspects. As I review my assessment, the results state the level of self-awareness, self-
management, empathy and social skills are in line to possess the emotional intelligence of
a successful leader. These characteristics are indicative of what leaders use to monitor
their feelings and those of others. The two OCEAN personality traits I feel could be most
effective as an inclusive leader are openness and conscientiousness. A leader who is
willing to be open to share and listen to other’s experiences is a great start to becoming
more inclusive in the workplace. Having a level of conscientiousness shows a desire to
do tasks well and take obligations of others seriously. When I think of ineffective leaders,
I see individuals who lack empathy and social skills. If you cannot care, understand and
communicate to lead teams to success, you are failing as a leader. A great leader will find
ways to communicate with others in an inclusive way. To possess portable skills are vital
for individuals to communicate, collaborate and adapt to inclusive workplace
environments when changing jobs. The knowledge and skills to train others can assist in
the quest to become a more inclusive leader. After taking the self-assessment, I concluded
that I have enough emotional intelligence to be a successful leader because my scores
indicated that I have good self-management, social awareness, and relationship
management. The assessment also indicated that I could work on my self-awareness a
little. Overall, my scores give a good representation of how I really am. I strive to
communicate and build relationships with co-workers and peers alike. I believe that the
conscientiousness trait will help me be a more inclusive leader because developing a more
diligent mind will allow me to be more self-aware of my actions and emotions. Over the
past few years of work in my young adult life, the ineffective leaders in my jobs all
shared a common trait which was neuroticism to some degree. These ineffective leaders
usually tend to lack communication skills, or the ability to maintain work relationships.
Inclusive leadership skills are portable because you can use these skills in social settings
outside of work or your personal life. Leadership skills allow for better communication
among people and allow you to achieve common goals within a group. From the results
of the self-assessment, I do believe I have what it takes to be a successful leader. I scored
high in the majority of areas, but the one that was lower than the others (the one I
expected) was in regard to empathy. I know for myself it has something I been long
working on and continue to still develop in my personal and professional lives. Being
capable of mastering empathy would allow me the ability to truly be an all-inclusive
leader, fully capable of interpreting and sustaining others needs and wants. Hopefully
before they even arise as a public thing.Touching on the next part, leads me to the
OCEAN trait of Agreeableness. That is the trait I believe would best help me as empathy
and compassion are those I know I do have larger areas of improvement still. As far as
leaders, the one that really comes to mind when thinking of ineffective leadership (if even
seeing short term success in number driven management) would be micro managing. All
these 'leaders' always displayed an intense need to be front and center while overseeing
and monitoring everything done. Control was a priority for them, and usually resulted in
the loss of control when people would become fed up, stop working, being efficient or
just leave. Inclusive leadership is incredibly portable, not just in our professional lives but
personal lives as well. These skills run hand in hand with our social stratosphere and
allow such people to quickly form bonds with those around them. To be seen as reliable,
respected and one with their community. This week's self-assessment kind of threw me
for a loop. It says I rank high in social skills, which in a small group setting I can agree
with, however in a larger group of people, I have social anxiety and withdraw into
myself. I also ranked high in self-management and awareness, which I completely agree
with. I tend to be more vigilant when assessing myself and my emotions because I know
myself better than anyone else does and if I cannot control or maintain my emotions then
I am unable to function at any level. So, I suppose if I am able to overcome my social
anxiety in larger groups of people then I believe that I do have to emotional intelligence
to be a good leader. As for the OCEAN personality traits, I believe that conscientiousness
and Neuroticism are my stronger suits. I believe that even with my social anxiety I still
function at full capacity and am able to handle stressful situations with a certain calm that
comes with my strong ability to compartmentalize and accomplish whatever task lays in
front of me.I'm not sure which attribute this ineffective leader would fall under, but I was
working at a locally owned Italian restaurant and the owner, and his wife would fight
with each other constantly while taking out their frustrations from their marital spats on
their employees. I stayed longer than anyone else has ever managed to tolerate them, but
it was rough.Portable and nonportable skills are essential for a leader to possess because
if you have one without the other, then you know how to do something, but lack the
technical ability to do so or vice versa. Either way you flip that coin it makes leadership
difficult because telling someone how to do something without being able to show them
sort of nullifies leadership. The self-assessment on EQ confirmed I have high emotional
intelligence. It started as a child. I was on the conflict resolution team and to this day, I
try to understand why people do what they do before passing judgment. I am a very
empathetic individual. If you’re hurting, it’s as if I can feel your pain and will try to help
as much as I possibly can. But based on the assessment, I would be a successful leader
because, I am aware of my feelings, able to understand others, and communicate those
feelings, effectively.I’m sure all components would help in being an inclusive leader.
Unfortunately, I’m not strong in all areas. So, of the Big Five OCEAN personality traits,
I believe Agreeableness, and Openness to Experience would help me to be an inclusive
leader. Also, EQ components, like social skills that include relationship management and
the ability to communicate, would be an advantage for being an inclusive leader. After
much thought, I did recall one ineffective leader. However, she was thrown into the role
without any training. So, it was an organizational error. She had good personality traits
like Extraversion and Agreeableness. But I believe her downfall was that of her being on
the higher end for Neuroticism. She did not know how to deal with the stress. Sometimes,
she took it out on her subordinates by yelling or even walking out. It was like watching
a bad relationship. One moment she was best friends with the personnel. Then before you
knew it, she would go on a rampage. While you may have to learn a job-specific skill,
emotional intelligence components and OCEAN personality traits are portable skills. EQ
will allow you to build and manage relationships individually and as a team. Like EQ,
Agreeableness will help you work well with others. Then, Conscientiousness will prove
credibility and reliability. Openness to Experience will welcome creativity. Finally, being
able to handle stress and criticism by being on the lower end of Neuroticism will help in
being an inclusive leader because having thick skin will help in speaking out against
wrongdoings. So, even if you must learn a new skill, having these portable skills will call
for better interactions across diverse groups .
