By Definition, leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization, the
office or position of a leader, capacity to lead, or the act or an instance of leading.
Leadership is about motivating a group of people to use teamwork and accomplish a
common goal. Leadership captures the essentials of being able and prepared to inspire
others. Successful leadership is built upon philosophies both innovative and plagiarized that
are successfully interconnected to others in a way that involves them sufficient to act as the
leader wants them to act. A leader inspires others to act while simultaneously directing the
way that they act. They must be personable enough for others to follow their orders, and
they must have the critical thinking skills to know the best way to use the resources at an
organization's disposal. The terms leadership and management tend to be used
interchangeably, but they're not the same. Leadership requires traits that extend beyond
management duties. Both leaders and managers have to manage the resources at their
disposal, but true leadership requires more. I would define leadership as the ability to lead a
person or group of persons in a variety of environments such as the workplace and personal
life. To the extent that leadership is an art, a method to improve leadership can be to study
other leaders and how they handle situations so that one can adapt their style and gain new
insight and skills. After taking the self-assessment, I believe I have what it takes to be a
leader because I show competence and the ability to communicate and understand others
well. However, my level of focus can improve. I do believe that people need growth and
development to be more inclusive leaders because an inclusive leader must have a good
understanding of diversity and communications among people. I would mentor an aspiring
leader to learn to communicate with people. I feel that communication is key to unlocking a
whole subsection of leadership development. When one knows how to talk and listen to
others, people can have better understandings of each other. The result is the trainee is
viewed as more credible and competent. In my personal experience leadership is the ability
to lead an individual or individuals in a positive way they promotes some type of growth.
Rather its in work life or personal life, just having the ability to help grow a person. I do
look at leadership as an art because you have to be a person that can play many roles and
also a person that can separate your work from your personal life. That task alone is easier
said than done. After taking my self-assessment the results were pretty much what I
expected which was that I present the qualities of being a leader. I agree with the
assessment 100% mostly in the teamwork and communication fields. Im defiantly the type
of person that if I'm working on the team I care more about our outcome of the task as a
group rather than just my part of the work. Im not the type of person who would boast
about what I did. It's a "us" thing because we're a team. I do believe that people need
growth and development to become good leader. No one person was born perfect or with
all the right answers. As a leader if you can acknowledge the areas you need growth in and
then take the time out to educate yourself on those topics. That alone shows that you have
the potential to be a great leader. I define leadership as a skill that benefits not only the
person that possesses this skill but also benefits those that are surrounded by this individual.
Leadership is a skill that allows an individual to lead, guide and influence others to learn
and grow. I believe it takes a selfless person to be a great leader, they do not just think of
themselves, they sincerely want the best for their subordinates and like to see them
succeed. In completing my self-assessment, the results reveal that I have what it takes to
lead in the workplace, and I have to say that I agree. I have been lucky to work with and be
mentored by great leaders. They guided me through the beginning of my career and I would
like to do the same for others. I want to help my work team reach their short and long-term
employment goals. I can be a resource for them and assist them to get the training and
experience they need to be successful in their careers. If employees are happy in their
careers, we all benefit including the organization we work for.I think people need growth
and development to become inclusive leaders, without a broad knowledge people tend to be
closed-minded and siloed in their thoughts. I would coach others to have an open mind to
diversity, working alongside people with different backgrounds can teach us a different way
of accomplishing our goals. A leader is someone who has the ability to inspire other
individuals or groups while at the same time directing them to do what needs to be done to
accomplish the goals. Improving ones art of leadership can be done in multiple different
ways. The first thing that comes to mind is ensuring you have a positive attitude. If you
lead with a positive attitude, then the people you are leading will be positive when working
on their tasks. Based on the results of the self-assessment, I do believe I have what it takes
to be a leader. I have had much experience leading both in my current career and within my
own business. When leading a team, it is important that you are open minded and listen to
all points of view. You must be willing to jump in the trenches and show your subordinates
that you are willing and able to work right alongside them. Growth and development are a
constant part of everything we do in life and leadership is no different. As the world
changes and grows we have to learn to adapt how we lead.
Diversity within a team, makes a stronger team. I feel that a big part of leadership is
coaching and teaching people how to become a leader so they also can meet their personal
goals. When I think of the word leadership, I think of someone who's resilient, someone
who looks after the welfare of others, someone who isn't ashamed to go after what they
want, and someone who's a teacher. Some methods that come to mind for improving one's
are of leadership would be to take management and leadership classes periodically to brush
up on leadership skills, and to use every day as an opportunity of improvement. I believe I
have what it takes to lead in the workplace because I have a heart for people . I enjoy
helping others , but in the same instincts I can discern when discipline is needed. I also
enjoy finding ways of improvement not only for myself but for those who work around me.
People need growth and development to become more inclusive leaders. This is needed
because the world we live in today is constantly changing you have to purposely seek
others' perspectives, and this promotes change. I could coach or mentor aspiring leaders to
better appreciate diversity and inclusion by incorporating outside resource groups to
demonstrate how this can be done based on the programs they provide. I would also host
classes once a month to help everyone see and feel that everyone plays a part, and everyone
is important. Leadership to me is the ability to guide/lead an individual(s) to achieve results
both in a personal level or a work environment. Through that, you not only do some sort of
mentoring, but establish accountability along the way which will help shape a better
productive person. Being able to communicate efficiently and clearly comes to mind when
considering a method for leadership improvement. Tackling hard conversations are part of
growth both for the leader and subordinate so making sure you communicate everything
with a goal in mind is also helpful. Regardless how the conversations go, you have to also
be able to listen to the other party as that will gain trust from them to which in return helps
you be able to advance in your mentoring or coaching. At our work, we have frequent
Professional Development days throughout the month, at least one if not more, where we
focus on how to be more leaders in our everyday interactions with our peers along with
being more inclusive with diversity. During these days, we even have scenarios and role
plays to help capture possible interactions. They can be corny at times, but do eventually
showcase some great ideas on improvement. I tend to listen and just take away what I see
fit to my persona and apply adequately. I would define leadership as someone who
influences or guide others whether it is a group of people, a team, or a company. When I
think of leadership, I think of someone who has a good, positive impact on someone or a
team. I think of someone that you could look up to. A method that comes to mind for
improving one's "art of leadership" is to lead by example. If you are the leader, you want
others to follow you so it is best that you do the right thing so that they will follow. My
results show that I have moderate leadership skills which I agree. I believe I have what it
takes to be a leader, but I am not sure if I would want that much pressure or responsibility
depending on what I am leading or who I am leading. I do believe that people need growth
and development to become more inclusive leaders because it can make them more
successful. I could coach or mentor aspiring leaders to better appreciate diversity and
inclusion by leading by example. If I am showing that diversity is important and making
sure everyone is included while being a leader, then someone who is aspiring to be a leader
could follow in my footsteps. I would define leadership as setting a precedent or a positive
role for others, including yourself. Leadership should motivate others to better their
performance and apply themselves where they are positively contributing to a team (i.e.,
work team, family team, or athletic team). However, our textbook defines leadership as a
complex phenomenon involving a leader, a follower, and a situation which influences
others in achieving a common goal.
In my opinion, there is an art to leadership, and there are a select few that take on this role
with pride and honour. If you want to be a leader, or want to improve on your leadership
skillsI would recommend conducting the following:
Communication is key! You must learn how to bean authority figure without
commanding respect. If you can positively communicate with your team members,
you will earn respect, and a support system for your decision-making.
Be consistent and timely! If you are researching a problem in your team, it is very
important to treat each situation consistently and act accordingly. The best method is
to be proactive and not reactive to a situation.
In my self-assessment, my total score was 93/100, suggesting that I have good leadership
skills. My personal stability was 9/10, showing that I can keep others on track and focused
on goals that we are pursuing together. My productive was 14/15, proving that I am
dependable and effective, using our time and resources well. My self-management was a
15/15, suggesting that I can manage my emotions and hold myself accountable. For
boundary setting, my score was 10/10 which shows that I can establish boundaries to avoid
burnout. My communication was a 13/15, which tells me that I could do a little bit better to
get in that 95% range! My work quality was 8/10, showing that I can get distracted by
others, but not so I won’t complete work. And finally, my teamwork score was 24/25,
showing that we are modeling how to be successful as a group, not just an individual.
Based on my scores, I am confident that I have what it takes to lead a workplace.I believe
that everyone could always use growth and development to become a more inclusive leader.
In my current organization, I regulate annual trainings, and some quarterly onesthis
ensures that everyone is continuing to perfect their skills as leaders. Everyone should
consistently be trying to specialize in their skills and become better
motivators/influencers.As an HR Director, I try to mentor my HR team daily to appreciate
diversity and inclusion company wide. It is very important that we celebrate all cultures and
can relate to one another on some sort of level. We mandate sensitivity trainings, cultural
trainings, webinars, and attend one seminar a year on communication.
