Of the 4 social errors and biases I am most affected by diffusion of responsibility. I
have a tendency to avoid situations if it has nothing to do with me. I find myself, at
times, saying "that's not our job, please send to the correct department." Instead I
could have analyzed and used my critical thinking skills to determine what was sent
to and direct it myself to the correct department, as well as advising the sender
where to send for future references. Daily we see this social error used for things
that we feel has nothing to do with us, when we could have down our own research
and decided if this is something that can directly affect me.
A fallacy that I have personally encountered was with a insurance marketing
company. During the presentation they promised a healthy consistent salary,
bonuses, and trips that you can win. They did not disclose however that there was a
signup fee of $100 and that the only way to actually see that healthy salary was to
recruit and build your own team. I joined the company because of the picture of
financial freedom was painted so nicely but had I done some critical thinking I would
have discovered the amount of work it would actually take to reach the level of
success that was presented.
The most interesting topic covered this week was Fallacies and how using critical
thinking can help with not falling for them. The different types of fallacies is a bit
confusing but I will reread that section for better understanding.
