When a decision is based solely on emotion, it can lead to a poor outcome. This is
why it's important to use critical thinking as well. Some emotions can create a need
to act quickly on. Anger is one of these. When we're upset we have a desire to
quickly respond, which is exactly the opposite of what we should do. On the other
hand, empathy doesn't require this as much, because it demonstrates compassion.
Before I make emotion based decisions, I like to $ip the script %rst (how would I like
be treated and heard if I was the other person). This has helped me greatly when
having di&cult conversations & addressing concerns. It has also helped with how I
handle and respond to others. It's also important to recognize their emotional state
as well & respond in the most e)ective way. Communication is what brings your
thoughts to the table to share with others. If someone is lacking in communication,
their ideas and views can't be shared e)ectively and the message gets lost. I really
enjoyed Tony Robbins video on Emotional Involvement in Decision Making. He
shared some great insight on what in$uences our decisions and why.
Positive emotions during decision making can inspire and have great impact on
people that in$uence them to ‘act’ for a cause.4Negative emotions o)er the same
outcome, but I believe if someone is forced, coerced or manipulated, the call to act is
temporary.
Some of the strategies I use to balance my emotions and reasons are meditation,
prayer and exercise.4I utilize all 3 while at work most of the time.4Years ago, I worked
in an o&ce with 2 other women.4We all had di)erent jobs but sometimes are duties
crossed paths. The stench of competition was strong.4It seems we all had the same
goal to impress the supervisor in order to get a promotion.4Since the mood and
moral was low, we decided to get snippy with one another until one day I stood up
and said, ‘let’s just stop’.4We then spoke to our supervisor about taking a course that
explained the source of our strength - respect.4Surprisingly, we all agreed and after
we completed the training things got better.
The role of communication in critical thinking changes constantly.4Our society of
thinkers is vast and diverse.4Educating one-self with the basic communicative styles
assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive helps us to understand how
to e)ectively convey or receive a message. My grandmother passed away in
1995.4She was con%ned to a hospice care facility in Arizona.4At the time of her
passing, I lived in California.4However, she managed to give the care givers my
number to deliver a message.4The nurse told me that my grandmother said she was
proud of me and not to be scared.4I totally mis understood and thought not being
scared meant ‘be %rm or stern and say no.4Man was I wrong.4Lol
The results from the questionnaire about communication style stung and stunned
me.4It made me realized that I’ve mis-managed my feelings.4While it isn’t the best
news, I’m not sure if I want to be ‘made over’ as the textbook suggests.4So, while the
questionnaire is partially right, I still enjoy being a square peg.
