Two major environmental challenge that I believe are faced by society are climate change
and air pollution. Global warming also is attributing to climate change. Climate change is
when weather patterns have a long term change. For example, if a place that normally
has no snow began to have snow that is climate change. Air pollution is when substances
are present in the atmosphere such as dust or pollen. My results from the Build Your
Proficiency Diagnostic somewhat reflected my understanding. I don't know all there is to
know about environmental science and my results reflected such. After taking the
diagnostics I realized I have so much to learn because I don't really know much about it
as I should. I learned the effects of the environmental science on the world and how it
changes and is not always the same. I look forward to learning so much from this class
because it is important to be educated and have knowledge about these things. I am
nervous but excited to learn as much as I can.
My “Build your Proficiency” Diagnostic was at 52%. I was unfamiliar with most of the
terminology used to describe processes and procedures within the field of environmental
science. So, I learned and took notes that I intend to use going forward. There were a
few questions that were written in a manner that made common sense which helped me.
After taking the diagnostic and reading chapter one, I would say that two major
environmental changes faced by society today are finding ways to support population
growth and finding sustainable systems of agriculture to feed the world’s people. Another
factor connected to these two is consumption, which is the human use of material and
energy. Consumption is connected to a nation’s growth, which is the expansion in output
of a nation’s goods and services. It seems that the most developed countries in the world
also consume the majority of the world’s resources which makes sense. The most
undeveloped countries suffer from lack. These countries experience lack of resources,
lack of education, healthcare, adequate housing, and of course financial lack connected
to unskilled labor. Under-developed countries tend to become laden with debt based on
their needs and inability to support themselves, so this creates a continuous cycle of
poverty. Inevitably, the most developed countries contribute in part to the plight of the
poor based on how finances or loans are distributed and in turn, satisfied by those
countries. I am looking forward to learning all that I can in order to share with others
and do my small part in helping to support our planet.
I think two major environmental issues are global warming and pollution of our oceans.
Pollution is a huge issue. I don't think people think about the trash they throw on the
ground. If its not getting picked up, it will get taken down the storm drains and
eventually out to the ocean. Our plastic waste his harming the ecosystem. Jobs and
ingredients to medicine are created by the ocean. Also the ocean produces over half the
world's oxygen. Global warming is also is a major issue. This is all we hear about. Our
world is constantly changing because of the way we treat it.I was a little nervous to take
this proficiency test. I took this be reading the chapters and I'm hoping that is correct. It
allowed me to take a look and see what I know before jumping into the chapters. I also
worry about test anxiety. I like the fact that this class allows a pre-test. I want to be able
to take the time study on the things that may need more of my attention.
