Smart Phone, Dumber you?
In today’s society almost everyone owns a smart phone. The world is becoming more
advanced and technological you can do almost anything from the palm of your hand. Even though
we have access to all of these advances those this actually help boost our intellectual aspects. In
the article “Smart Phone, Dumber you? (Freedman, L. 2018) the author feels like the new age
technology could be in fact slowing us down in the brain category. I agree with the author, and I
believe he has some very good points. Going deeper into the article we find, what causes us to
become addiction. What causes us to lose insight, and what ways we can reverse these things if
they happen.
Using your smart phone frequently can make most people lose their grip on reality. This
can also make people very vulnerable to their surroundings, but what effects does the smart phone
effect our cognitive state? According to the author A smartphone is basically a mini dopamine
factory, doling out hits of the feel-good brain chemical as a reward when you get Likes on social
media or relieve boredom by scrolling Twitter. (Freedman, L 2018). Dopamine isn’t the best
hormone that is released in your body, because it tells you to do what makes you feel good even
though it not good for. The more dopamine released them more you want to feel and that’s how
the phone addiction begins.
Now we’re hooked and can’t even acknowledge it the need to be liked and needed has
taken over. We feel as if our phones can give us everything we need and we lose insight of the real
world around us. “An average American reaches for their phones 80 times per day.” (Freedman,
L. 2018) as stated by the author. That number may seem like a low number but think of the
Americans in that group that work 8-12 hours a day, that number seems pretty big now.

Even though we are in a smart phone daze there are some way to get back on track. Here
are a series of way that was added by the author “delete your most addictive apps, set up a
roadblock, get some distance, stack hack, download to detox, space, moment, then freedom,” (
Freedman, L. 2018), So if you feel as if you are one of those people that needs to get their mind
back on track take a few of these strategies and get your life under control.
We are now in a society where technology will never stop growing. Technology is a part
of our world and some may say the we would be lost without it. It is up to us if we let if control us
or not. We have the power and tool so that we won’t continue to be stuck in this loop together.
Run your smart phone do not let your smart phone run you
