Subject: Information on the cyber domain to determine organization's cybersecurity needs
Cyber Domain
The cyber domain refers to the cyberspace that is the result of technological
advancement and evolution. It is the fifth domain after land, Air Sea and space that has
become a necessity in the 21st century. It is a human creation that is the result of the
continuous technological development. It has significant impact at the individual level as
well as at the organizational level (Efrony, 2019). It is the cyberspace that exists within the
information environment, encompassing of interdependent networks of IT infrastructures
along with the resident data, including the Internet, computer systems, telecommunications
network, as well as the embedded processors and controllers (Crowther, 2017).
Key components and aspects of cybersecurity and its relation to the cyber domain
Cybersecurity is the safeguarding of the internet-connected systems like the
software, hardware and data from different kinds of cyber threats. This practice is adopted
by most of the organizations in the digitalized era so that the IT landscape of the
undertaking can be protected from any unauthorized access or malicious practice. The key
components that make up cybersecurity include application security, information security,
network security, and disaster recovery planning, operational security and end-user
education. Each of these components work together and help a business entity to strengthen
its IT posture and have an edge against cybercriminals and online hackers (What are the
Key Elements of CyberSecurity, 2020). The key components of cybersecurity play a
cardinal role for an organization in the vast cyber domain and help to manage the
uncertainty and threats that could affect the entity in the domain.
Approach for implementing information security for the organization
The bottom-up approach can be adopted for implementing information security in
the organization. It would be implemented by the system administrators and the
professionals who function in the network security arena (Lubell, 2016). The primary
purpose for choosing such an approach is to make the optimum use of the knowledge of
individuals who work in the field of information system. In the highly unpredictable cyber
domain the approach would be useful to design a secure cybersecurity model that is in sync
with the security needs of the organization. The bottom-up approach could be further
adopted in the broader cyber domain by integrating the new insight, knowledge and
expertise of the employees that work in the IT department of the organization (Lubell,
2016).
Possible threats for the organization in the cyber domain
A diverse range of threats could arise before the organization in the cyber domain that
could negatively affect its Information Technology posture such as:
• Phishing – This threat is a fraudulent practice involving sending mails to induce the
revelation of sensitive and confidential data like passwords (Shi & Saleem, 2012).
• Botnets – These internet-connected devices could be used for performing the
Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attacks, steal data and give unauthorized
access to the attacker (Eslahi et al., 2012).
• Ransomware – This threat could gain unauthorized access to the IT system of the
entity and block the user access.
Such threats could compromise the cybersecurity of the firm in the cyber domain.
Sincerely,
Mr X,
IT Supervisor
