I chose a topic titled The Future of Computing Depends On Making It Reversible.
I found it fascinating because it taught me some things about the past In this
article it talks about the evolution of the processors over the years. From the
single core processors to the multi-core ones we use today. It is expected that the
processors will stop getting faster in the near future because they are already as
small as they can go and they have parts of what is referred to as "dark silicon,
parts of the chip that are turned off to reduce heat. This article taught me a lot
and was a good source for the inner workings of processors. The topic I chose
to write about is the 3D printed ventilator for the COVID-19 patients. I chose to
write about this topic because even before this pandemic, our scientist, and doctors
have been trying to come up with a cure for this virus. Hospitals are full, and
ventilators are being used up. This could help a lot of people because this 3D
printed ventilator could possible help about 20 corona virus patients at once
instead of each patient using one ventilator at a time which could take them up
quite faster. This could possibly alleviate the COVID-19 cases, and empty out the
hospitals a bit and it could also help the death rate. Since COVID-19 is a
respiratory disease, ventilators will be in constant use at least until a vaccine is
brought about. After reading the article, Mohamed Ishag explained to us how they
would be used. According to Ishag who has his masters degree in electrical
engineering, the 3D printer device is made of an oxygen supply line an air
compressor and a UV light that sterilizes the air.Ishag explains that it's pulled
from the supply line and passes through a valve which distributes air to the
patients. Increasing the computing power of the processors has become a growing
need. With the latest advancements in technology, chiplets are being used for the
remaking of the processors. Intel and AMD are increasingly becoming dependant
on the chiplets to boost the performance of the computers. The growing need to
reduce the large chip sizes and ever increasing costs have led to the evolution of
a solution (Moore, 2019). Now, processors are being constructed with smaller-sized
chiplets that are less expensive combined with high bandwidth connections in a
single package.
Intel used Foveros, a 3D chiplet integration technology to produce Lakefield
mobile processor. With high-data-rate, Foveros helps in providing more data and
power, thereby enhancing the overall power of the processor (Moore, 2019). It
helps in boosting graphics computation and consumes only one-tenth of the standby
power. Foveros enables high performance computing.
Chiplets are growing to become the ultimate future of the processors. The chiplet
technology will help in enhancing the capability and performance of the processors,
thereby leading to enhanced computing. Chiplets will enable the remaking of the
computer systems .It would also result in the availability of more flexible, cheaper,
and mix-and-match systems. With the use of the less expensive technology,
availing high performance computing becomes possible. The article i choose to
write is, How Online Learning Kept Higher Education Open During the
Coronavirus Pedemic. I chose this article because, I find it very intriguing and
challenging to kids, young and old people. Online learning is something I truly
enjoy doing, but not everyone enjoys online learning. Technology has become the
only source of learning that we can depend on, which is very scary, challenging
and yet a very big push to our brains if used proper. Online learning is not
something that the older generation is used too. They struggle alot with having to
know how to access the internet for their basic uses. Now they have to actually
learn online if they are in school, which makes it more complicated and difficult.
The coronavirus has made having to study online harder to so many people. I just
hope we can get through this Pandemic. That will give so many people a chance
to study a more happier healthier way for their brains. The topic I chose to read
was “Sony Builds AI Into a CMOS Image Sensor” it’s Basically a machine that
can take a small section of a image and find its originality and also the battery
life last almost a year of one battery , The article also mentioned other companies
have this idea but they are the 1st to actually distribute. The benefit of such a
system is that it can discard all kinds of unnecessary or unwanted data before that
data ever goes into the main device’s storage or processing pipeline this intelligent
pro type is only a prototype available for testing but not production you may
expect a higher drawer or latency from a chip integrated AL processes. Cameras
could easily go blur on a object in public but the image sensor picks up
everything very clear it also has the ability to edit images and do all kinds of
cropping ect basically it’s making your images as perfect as possible for even
being sent to the main logic board ect yy I’ve learned that technology is advancing
very rapidly and it Makes me more excited for the future. The article I found
interesting was on the right to repair movement and the widespread effects it has.
Managing several Apple products, I am very familiar with the difficulty of
repairing and upgrading devices. However, I was unaware of widespread impact
that it has on other areas of life. The example they give in the article is how
farmers are now struggling to maintain and repair the software used to run their
equipment. What was once analog levers and valves are now buttons an switches
found in the cab. I am hoping that manufacturers will start to embrace the right
to repair movement. In the past, I have replaced iPhone screen which wasn’t
necessarily hard but finding the parts needed was extremely difficult. However
even when I had found the parts I needed the price for them almost made it
more worth my time to just buy a new phone. If you remember landline phones,
you will recall that when it was broke, it was repaired by "the phone company",
i.e. AT&T.The fact is modern tech is complex and requires extremely expensive
equipment to manufacture and repair. Frequently, one of the issues that makes
repair so difficult is a design decision to allow for exactly the convenience and
form factor consumers demand. Chiplets is the new way of building the boards
means combinations of other processors under one chip so they can interconnect
and give maximum throughput. The chiplets uses mix-match means users can take
different processor chips and integrate them into one chip which gives better
performance and speed. While designing such chiplets, cost and size is the main
issue which can be corrected in upcoming years. Some researchers have use
different chip processors and build the chiplets which are more powerful than
ever.Combining other brand processors is always risk because the different power
consumptions, clock speed, compatibility and performance issues can cost you
entire project. In current market only one approach has used which is mix and
match by testing different processors under one chip. This complex process
followed by many companies and they tied up with other companies to build
highly reliable processors and reduces cost. In world many of the student seeking
career in IT technologies and IEEE like institutes are providing many solutions
and courses to become professional. IEE also has its own blog where peoples
share their experiences and discuss the new and old technology related stuff. On
the internet many sites showing the latest market news and technologies which can
have future in upcoming years.IEE spectrum is another kind of information site
and blog where all latest engineering an technological information presented. In
current market many industries are looking for more compact and reliable
technologies. To survive in such market every individual need to be updated their
skill so they can match up with industry. The latest new trends and technologies
can be seen in IEEE sites so, other professionals are keep reading such articles
about new and upcoming technologies. The drawbacks of old technologies and
solutions with new technologies been seen on the site. All electronic chip
manufacturing companies and their R&D department keep looking into new
technologies so they can easily develop new software and chips which can be
more powerful and technology compatible. The artical that I chose to write about
from the IEEE Spectrum is the COVID-19 Digital Contact Tracing where Apple
and Google emerged and worked together as MIT tests validity. I thought this was
very intriguing that the two largest smart technology software developers in the
world come together to win the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic but will
this create a breach in our privacy. The artical states that these "software
developers have built digital contact tracing apps for Apple and Google mobile
operating systems, which jointly encompass the majority of smartphones around the
world".In perspective this system can automatically notify people when they cross
paths with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19. According to this
article, other countries have already started using this system and it seems to be
working for them. Will the United States follow suit? Apple and Google have
made our privacy thier main focus. They stated that the "apps using their contact
tracing application interfaces or API's is only for use of government health
authorities and that people must consent before sharing positive test results". This
basically entails that the PACT project or the "Private Automated Contact Tracing"
system uses "bluetooth signals or "chirps" from phones within a 6-foot radius. I
think technology has come to reach outstanding heights in order to come together
against the fight of this invisible giant walking amongst us all. The question is
will state health officials use this technology and an even better question is are
we willing to use it?. The article that I chose to write about this week is about
how Sony built an AI into a CMOS Image Sensor. It uses machine learning to
figure out what is being put to the sensor. This is very interesting, as the AI
gets more objects and images placed into its sensor it will become more and
more precise. The reason that i am interested in this piece of technology would
be due to the fact that if it becomes advanced enough, will it be able to
recognize individual people? With social media being as popular as it currently is
and understanding that data can be purchased from these platforms, it wouldn't be
very difficult to scan profile pictures and have a name for the face. Using this
technology for surveillance could greatly increase the security cameras
effectiveness.Understanding the possibilities of technology will help you get an idea
of what is to come in the future, or what could have went wrong in the past.
Reading this article gave me an idea of how to troubleshoot computers by
critically thinking about all the possibilities. Understanding what the component
does and what would happen if it ceased to work. The article I choose to write
about from IEEE SPECTRUM page is temperature screening device, contactless
outdoor temperature check stations screens people before they enter buildings. We
all know that covid 19 has cause change in this world. The disease has been
spreading and infected hundreds of thousands of people all over the world and has
caused many to be out of jobs, staying at home and have taken many lives.
These engineers are trying to develop a new device that can scan people
temperature to reduce spreading covid 19.
They have station which contain infrared temperature sensor which a person would
stand in front the station and the object test the person temperature and the
infrared temperature sensor reading the person temperature and if the reading is
high the machine will message the person to get a covid 19 test. The overall
process will take under 20 seconds. I can see where to create a technology like
this to help monitor people during this pandemic disease and to reduce the
spreading of the virus would need great minds and skills, these machines would
need maintenance and technician work to maintain and keep operating. I chose the
article How Online Learning Kept Higher Ed Open During the Corona Virus
Pandemic. I found this article very interesting, since I am already doing online
learning. So this really didn't have much of an impact on me. But for many
students and professors shifting to online learning in a matter of weeks had a
different impact on them. According to the article something like this would take
months or even years to make a change like this. Everything just happened so
fast, that all these universities had to transition all the classes to distance learning.
Even though we live an ever changing technology world, shifting did not come
easy to some. The professors went from lecturing in a classroom to live streaming
on Zoom or video conferencing through other types of apps. Which is kind of the
same concept but some students found this to be less interactive. This especially
has been challenging for the students who do not have computer, tablets or even
internet to be able to make this transition. Many students going to the campus
physically was there only way of attending class. At this point no one is really
sure how long this will last. There is also fear for many of going back due to
the circumstances. This pandemic has made a lasting impact on everyone. And
from my personal experience, this not only happened to higher education but to
our kids schooling. My kids were on spring break and did not expect not to go
back to school. It took the schools about a week or 2 to get on board making
the transition to distance learning.
