We use normalization to reduce the data being anomalous or
redundant and inaccurate as these discrepancies when dealing with
data can be a small issue that transitions into a much larger
issue down the road. normalization sorts this data into a
related table, dividing the data and establishing relationships
between the tables as well. The consequences of not normalizing
a relational database are broad but none of them are good
things to have happen. These issues include inaccuracy, slow and
inefficient data translation, and the data may end up not being
what the developer is expecting to see when putting the
database together. There's been a number of these subjects that
seem like mild oversights but in reality are something that
could absolutely devastate a project, especially if that project has
a dead line for a client or a development schedule to keep
up with. Normalization allows for us to clear up these
discrepancies and it laid out fairly easily enough that anyone
should be able to understand it which helps especially for
those of us who don't have much software development
experience as of yet. Normal forms are being used in software
engineering because it helps to split larger tables into smaller
one, so it is easier to link them using relationships. Another
reason is that it improves the integrity of data. Consequences
of not using normalization of databases is that there would be
a lot of redundancies within the tables. There could also be
a lot of errors. These can cause things to slow down since
it needs time to break things down. Plus I feel like you
will need to an update a lot which will also cause things
to slow down. We use Normalization to minimize the
redundancy of data. It helps to eliminate and reduce the
redundancy in database tables. It also helps streamline data
making it more concise. Searching, sorting and creating data is
faster. You can fit more data on a page or layout. It also
gives more flexibility since there are fewer files per table.
Since the information can be standardized, the size of the
information and storage it takes can be reduced, fitting more
information into one place.
Some of the downfalls of normalization would that the there is
a constant need to go update query tables since the tables
contain certain codes. The data is stored as lines of code
rather than genuine data. The data model is also very difficult
to manipulate. Most applications use a simplified connection to
the data model so they have issues reading the more advanced
code used in normalization. This will also create a "slow
down" in the data due to longer processing times on the
more advanced data coding. Normalization is the process of
organizing data in a database such as how the tables are
created, what belongs in the columns and the relationships
between the tables. This helps by eliminating redundancy within
the database that can waste space. Using a normalization
structure when creating a database during the software engineering
phase can help lessen errors and improve performance of the
program. If a database is created without normalization tables
could be created that have “Inconsistent dependencies” such as
trying to access an address by searching the zip code.A
drawback of normalization would be creating a longer task, with
more tables to join, the need to join them together increases
and causes it to take more time. Normalization of a database
is a complex and difficult task due to the analysis needing
to know the purpose of the database and what it should be
optimized for such as reading or writing data, or both. The
use of normal forms has benefits in both the field of
software engineering and that of data analysis. They make it
feasible to do data analysis and arrange code in an effective
manner. The First Normal Form (1NF), the Second Normal Form
(2NF), and the Third Normal Form are the three separate
types of functional Normal Forms (3NF). Any one of these
many file formats for software components may be seen as a
collection of interconnected processes that carry out a particular
activity. The usage of normal forms helps to prevent unforeseen
issues, such as software faults that might lead to the failure
of a system. A few of these errors are the direct result of
redundant code, which may be seen as performing the same
thing more than once. The presence of inconsistent data is a
common issue that may lead to disruptions and mistakes in the
system. These issues might arise if there are discrepancies in
the information that two or more components of the system
need in order to function properly. Another problem may arise
when two separate pieces of software are integrated into a
single program in order to carry out the same function. This
can result in an error when the two separate pieces of
software are utilized in conjunction with one another. The
solution to these issues is to make use of conventional forms
in order to locate, simplify, and remove any unneeded
components of the code, as well as any unwanted software
functionality. Computer databases are used everywhere and for
everything. Normal From Database are used in software engineering
because they are simple and store data in a logical and
related way.
Some of the advantages of doing this are:
Ease of storage
Information is easily retrieved
Information is secure
Data is organized logically which would be like how it would
be stored in the real world
Reduces the database size
Prevents data duplication and ensures each data piece is only
stored once
Some of the disadvantages of using normal form database are:
Additional costs for using the database
It slows data performance over other types of databases .Normal
form databases are complex and difficult tasks to complete. In a
project if you use and Normal form database some of the
consequence could be time and money. When completing a
project since the normal form database is more complex you
would need to ensure the programmers now how to code and
develop that type of database and also give them more time
to create it because it is more complex. Because you need a
higher trained developer, and it will require more time it
means that there would be a higher cost for the project.
Normalization is the process of minimizing redundancy from a
relation or set of relations. Redundancy for engineering is the
inclusion of extra components which are not strictly necessary to
functioning, in case of failure in other components. What this
means is it simplifies data in a database for the software
engineers to read and understand. An example would be if we
had a data base for customers at a video rental store. We
would have a name, address, and what titles they have
borrowed. Instead of compiling all the titles into one cell, the
first normal form (1NF) would separate those labels into their
own row of data, keeping the persons information that has
borrowed it. Without normalization, it could lead to issues
with the hardware, software, and leaves a risk for inaccurate
data. A consequence for not having normalization can create
duplicate information and inaccuracy data as this will increase
the overall size. With an increased database full of potentially
inaccurate data, it would really deal a blow to your overall
system performance as it would require additional memory and
processing power to operate.
The main purpose of normal forms is to structure and organize
data in a way that minimizes redundancy, improves the integrity
of the data and make it easier to manage and maintain the
database over time. For example, in a company’s employee
information database, the 3NF is used to minimize redundancy
and dependency in the database. Another example, a products
database that contains a table that has no repeating groups of
data like a products table, first normal form is used to
ensure that each record in the table is unique, not redundant,
easy to update and more accurate.
If the database is not designed using normal form, it can
have many consequences that include data redundancy because
multiple copies of the same data will exist that make it
difficult to update and maintain. Thus, data integrity problems
and inconsistency will happen. With multiple copies of data
exist, data query is a problem. Not using normal form in
software engineering can lead to several problems that can
impact the reliability, efficiency, and integrity of a database.
Relational databases are a simply way to organize data. You
can combine data from other tables, sort results, and have a
variety of ways to organize the data, but it comes with
some issues. Normal forms are a way to address some of
those issues. One of the important issues that it addresses is
minimizing redundancy. Another reason normal forms are used is
to help make data more meaningful by reducing anomalies to
minimal or zero. This is done by making sure that a
specific set of rules are followed. For example, First normal
form (1NF) has six official requirements for a table:
1. Each column must have a unique name.
2. The order of the rows and columns doesn't matter
3. each column must have a single data type
4. no two rows can contain identical values
5. Each column must contains single value
6. Columns cannot contain repeating groups.
Some of the issues that can occur without normal forms are
things like, duplicate data, not being able to delete partial data
without deleting it all or the existence of unnecessary data. An
example of this was the relational database for the gym I use
to own. Normal forms prevented me form accidentally entering the
same member twice. It also helped keep people separated and
organized when there where multiple people with the same last
or first names. Normal forms are considered to be a powerful
tool for software engineering and data analysis. These forms can
be used to eliminate and reduce data redundancy in relational
databases throughout the process of software engineering. Software
engineers can easily use these forms to eliminate or reduce
undesirable characteristics like update, insertion, and deletion anomalies.
The normalization process classifies the larger table into different
smaller parts and uses relationships to relate them (DBMS
normalization: 1NF, 2NF, 3NF and BCNF with examples - javatpoint,
2021). Moreover, the normal forms are considered to be easy to
integrate the database created and the designed software for the
software engineers.
If the software engineer develops a relational database without
normalizing it, it can result in an inefficient, slow and inaccurate
database system. It will not produce the expected data from the
database system (Relational Database Normalization Process, 2021). Even it
becomes very difficult to update and handle the database without
normalizing the database as sometimes data can lose. If the database
is not using the normal form, then frequent updating, insertion, and
deletion anomalies can occur. Thus, it becomes important to nominalize
the database. For example, poorly normalized tables and a poorly
normalized database can create issues for the software engineer
because of the subsequent poor performance of the database system
and excessive disk I/O to the inaccurate database. Relational databases
are simple but can have unexpected issues if the database isn’t
properly designed. Normalization is a way for organizing statistics
in a database. One can run into a myriad of issues, so it
is important that a database is normalized to decrease
redundancy, for example, duplicate records and to make sure
clean related records is saved in all the table. It also
prevents any issues stemming from database modifications together
with insertions, deletions, and updates. I personally haven’t had
the pleasure of experienced these types of consequences myself
but doing some research I have read another example how a
poorly normalized database and poorly normalized tables can cause
issues with excessive disk usage and performance. An improperly
normalized situation can bring about massive facts redundancy,
which places a burden on all programs that manipulate the
data. Normal forms also known as normalization is the process
of organizing the data within the database. It is widely used
to minimize redundancy from a relation or set of relations. It
is also used to eliminate undesirable characteristics like Insertion,
Update, and Deletion Anomalies. Normalization divides the larger
table into smaller ones and links them using relationships. The
normal form is used to reduce redundancy from the database
table. The main reason for normalizing the relations is to
remove these anomalies. Failure to eliminate anomalies leads to
data redundancy and can cause data integrity and other problems
as the database grows. Normalization consists of a series of
guidelines that helps to guide you in creating a good database
structure.
Advantages of Normalization
• Normalization helps to minimize data redundancy.
• Greater overall database organization.
• Data consistency within the database.
• Much more flexible database design.
• Enforces the concept of relational integrity.
Disadvantages of Normalization
• You cannot start building the database before knowing what
the user needs.
• The performance degrades when normalizing the relations to
higher normal forms, i.e., 4NF, 5NF.
• It is very time-consuming and difficult to normalize relations
of a higher degree.
• Careless decomposition may lead to a bad database design,
leading to serious problems.
Relational databases are commonly used in software engineering
since they are easy to build and use. It is a suitable type
of database to use since it provides a decent mechanism for
searching, joining, and restricting data across a variety of tables.
It also allows for organizing those results.
Normal forms are used in software engineering to attempt to
avoid problems called anomalies. Anomalies can result in things
such as duplication of the entered data and issues with the
deletion of data that may not be related to the data you
need to delete.
The current system we use at work is a relational database.
One of the things I regret most is that we converted old
data into the new system. While this can be helpful in some
instances, we imported over 80,000 duplicate name records that
were not resolved ahead of time. The saying "Garbage in,
garbage out" certainly applies in this instance. Our old system
did not follow normal form rules and there was no way to
ensure that two or more rows were not identical. It also
meant that since the part of the information tied to the
name record was being brought in as a text file, there may
be involvements or other data not related to that name record
that could be deleted if the duplicate records were merged.
Once the records were merged it effectively deleted everything
from the old record which was not ideal.
When I think about this subject of normal forms and looking
at databases, I must be honest, its kind of boring to me. I
think frankly it's because looking at data can and sometimes is
a very lifeless kind of thing, though I can see the
importance of not only getting the information done correctly but
then also making sure that when you need the data to back
a claim or show a pattern, you want to be able to access
it at any given notice.
This leads to the issue of getting data done correctly in the
first place, and updation anomalies. When one is input data
into a table, the important thing to make happen is to make
it very simple for one to update that information as painlessly
as possible. However, what can happen is if no normal form
is taken into consideration, it could mean a tedious amount of
updating the information that would have taken a matter of
seconds to do if steps were taken. Another issue is deletion
anomalies as this could also have an impact on how you
track the data that connects to all the other. If you delete
one thing that is vital it could eradicate all other branches
as well. The closest thing I had to an experience with this
is when I was making my budget using excel and trying to
make my columns have data that would be important to other
rows. I would have to say that normal forms are used in
reducing and eliminating data redundancy in relational databases
during software engineering process. Normal forms also make it
easy for software engineers to integrate the designed software
and the database created. It is also used to eliminate
undesirable characteristics like Insertion, Update, and Deletion
Anomalies. Normalization divides the larger table into smaller and
links them using relationships. The normal form is used to
reduce redundancy from the database table. Without normalization,
database systems can be inaccurate, slow, and inefficient and
they might not produce the data you expect.
Without Normalization, it becomes difficult to handle and update
the database, without facing data loss. Insertion, Updating and
Deletion Anomalies are very frequent if database is not
Normalized. From a business perspective, the expense of bad
normalization is poorly operating systems and inaccurate, incorrect,
or missing data says (Poolet, 1999). (Poolet, 1999) also states
that Applying normalization techniques to OLTP database design
helps create efficient systems that produce accurate data and
reliable information. I don’t have any experience using database
but, what I do know is that careless decomposition may lead
to a bad database design, leading to serious problems. You
also cannot start building the database before knowing what the
user needs.
Data organization in a database is done by normalization. This
entails building tables and linking those tables together in
accordance with principles intended to safeguard the data and
increase the database's adaptability by removing duplication and
inconsistent reliance.
Disk space is wasted by redundant data, and maintenance issues
result. If data that already exists in multiple locations needs to
be modified, it must be updated in the same manner
everywhere. If the information is kept solely in the Customers
table and not elsewhere in the database, changing a customer's
address is significantly simpler to do.
Whereas it makes perfect sense for a user to search in the
Customers database for a specific customer's address, it might
not sound right to do so for the worker who phones on
that customer's behalf. The wage of the employee must be
transferred to the Employees table because it is connected to
or dependent upon the employee. Data might become difficult to
access as a result of inconsistent dependencies because the path
to finding the data may be incomplete or damaged.
First Normal Form
It has a meaning when placed in a relational database. It
has a structure that is easy to make. The 1NF rules will
be forced upon automatically unless weird things are applied, so
doing extra work might be advised. The benefit of 1NF is
allowing the creation of orders for an individual without the
need of inputting any columns.
Second Normal Form
A key is a collection of more than one area that exclusively
recognizes a record. There must be some sort of uniqueness to
include every field. The benefits of 2NF are data isn't
redundant as it is reduced and it has flexibility when it
comes to designing within a database.
Third Normal Form
A habit when there is a non-key area's worth depends on a
different non-key area's importance. The problem with this form
is that it would turn from one non-key field to another of
the same field. The benefits of this form are removing any
redundancy so the data becomes stable as well as the
reliability of the data.
Higher Levels of Normalization
Higher levels like BCNF increases the validity of the data by
coordinating the rows and lists of a relational database by
achieving database stabilization. One agreement that is often helpful
is to deliberately leave some of the data denormalized for
routine purposes. An example would be using ZIP codes. A
benefit of BCNF is that it is more limited regulation so that
the archive does not end in unusual abnormalities. When designing
a database it makes sure that it includes all the data that
is related to the primary key and that there are no
redundancies, it is nowhere to be seen. The task is to
remove any duplication and give a quick search when looking
up information. Defining tables and their relationships to create a
workable database is what normalization is. It needs to be
functional where the data is stored logically and uniquely.
Normal Forms are a powerful tool for data analysis and
software engineering. They help analyze data and structure code
efficiently. There are several types of Normal Forms including
First Normal Form (1NF), Second Normal Form (2NF), and
Third Normal Form (3NF) functional. All of these forms allow
you to view software components as a set of processes that
work together to complete a task. Normal forms prevent
unexpected problems such as software bugs that cause a system
to fail. Some of these bugs are caused by duplicated code
that carries out the same task in two different places, which
is known as redundancy. Common problems are inconsistent data
which can cause problems in the system and lead to errors.
These problems can occur if two or more parts of the
system contain conflicting information which stops them from
working correctly. Another bug is caused by different software
that performs the same function being combined into a single
program, which causes an error when the two software programs
work together. These problems are eliminated by using normal
forms to identify and simplify code sections that duplicate each
other and remove any unnecessary functionality from the program.
Normal forms are being used in software engineering to make
sure the data entered into the software form the user is
compatible with the database. Another reason is to make it
easier to work with the data in the database. If your
database is bult without normalizing it will be hared to find,
enter, edit, and delete data form the database. The database
would be hard to get the relationships to work correctly if
the data is not normalized. I have not yet had to work
with a database as I am new to information technology but
look forward to working with them. I hope to not run into
any problems, but I am sure I will have a time when the
data is not problem normalized and the database will have
problems. I hope that with what I learned in class I will
be able to handle the problem and correct it in a timely
manner. I hope the databases I create are all normalized form
the start and I wont have to redo them at a later date. yy
yy
Normal
Form
Description
yy 1NF
A relation is in 1NF if it contains an atomic
value.
yy 2NF
A relation will be in 2NF if it is in 1NF
and all non-key attributes are fully functional dependent
on the primary key.
yy 3NF
A relation will be in 3NF if it is in 2NF
and no transition dependency exists.
yy BCNF
A stronger definition of 3NF is known as Boyce
Codd's normal form.
yy 4NF
A relation will be in 4NF if it is in Boyce
Codd's normal form and has no multi-valued dependency.
yy 5NF
A relation is in 5NF. If it is in 4NF and
does not contain any join dependency, joining should
be lossless.
Normalization of a database is done so that the database is
structured correctly and so that information can be added to it,
updated, selected, and deleted appropriately. When databases are
properly normalized they are much easier to work with and to
build an application on top of. This especially helps developers
when they want to appropriately run the business transaction in
the database and report on them. Data normalization is the
method of altering data within a file so that people can
develop it for further challenges and evaluation. It is the
development of improving clean files. This involves reducing
unnecessary and formless data and creating the data to be seen
as comparable across all data and areas. The primary purpose
for normalizing the relationships is to delete these abnormalities.
Failure to reduce these irregularities leads to information severance
and can trigger data reliability as the list grows. Normalization
comprises a cycle of policies that improves to lead the person
in establishing a good list of constructs. Conflicting changes,
where the designer was not mindful of the current copy, lead
to a mistake in the structure, varying from unreliable monitoring
to information failure .It is important that a database is
normalized to minimize redundancy duplicate data and to ensure
only related data is stored in each table. It also prevents any
issues stemming from database modifications such as insertions,
deletions, and updates. The stages of organization are called
normal forms. Normalization is the process of reducing data
redundancy in a table and improving data integrity. Normalization
involves organizing the columns and tables in the database to
ensure that their dependencies are correctly implemented using
database constraints. yy Normalization is the process of organizing
data in a proper manner. It is used to minimize the
duplication of various relationships in the database. It is also
used to troubleshoot exceptions such as inserts, deletes, and
updates in the table. It helps to split a large table into
several small, normalized tables. The main advantage of
normalizing data, aside from the removal of errors, is
establishing a database that clearly shows how data from
different tables relate to each other says .This will improve the
visibility of data connections within your database, better informing
teams across your organization. An appropriately normalized database
helps to clarify the data relationships in the database and
eliminate errors in the data. This helps to make the meaning
of the data clear to software application developers who will
build software applications on top of the database. It also
helps to make the data relationships clear from a business
perspective and this is very helpful to the stakeholders who
will be using the database and the software applications built
upon it to run their business. I would agree that reducing
data redundancy is greatly implemented especially when the
identical data set is kept in multiple places. It might not
look like a huge difference until a lot of data groups load
up farther than it once was, taking up storage space on the
tables. Handling identical data when the tables are now loaded
can be a laborious process. To lessen data redundancy, constantly
delete lists that are required no longer. 3NF is deemed
sufficient for a normal relational database layout. A relational
database table is often depicted as “normalized” if it is in
the Third Form since most of the 3NF lists are open from
such anomalies as insertion, update, and deletion. Last week, we
had a product council meeting in my company. This meeting
is attended by the highest level of executives, developers, and
key stakeholders in our organization. We were reviewing one of
our product release processes to ensure that everyone was aware
of the standards contained in the process and how we
implement them in our organization. For stakeholders in an
organization to work well together, they have to follow the
standards and processes of the organization, especially when it
comes to software engineering. Software engineering and software
application development and implementation are too complex to
make up the processes and steps each time that we design
and implement systems. If we make up the steps each time
and don't follow processes and standards, we will significantly
increase the chances of failure on our projects.
when typically designing a database, the database designer will
implement the 1st - 3rd normal form and not include
additional normal forms. The higher-level normal forms cause tables
to be spread out into multiple tables which increases the
number of joins. More joins mean slower application performance.
Writing SQL statements with joins is also more complex, so it
increases the complexity of the SQL code.
