In this week’s lesson, we were instructed to use the ps aux command to find zombie processes
and then use the kill command to terminate them. Zombie processes are processes that have
completed their job and are defunct or dead. You can identify a zombie process by looking at the
list of processes and looking for a process that has Z in the status. First, you need to have your
command prompt open, then type ps aux | less to view all your computer’s processes. Use the
up/down arrow keys to find the zombie processes. When you find the zombie process, you need
to look at the PID number and write it down, so you do not have to worry about remembering it.
Next, type q to exit the list of processes and return to the command prompt. Finally, you can now
terminate the zombie processes by typing kill –9 and the PID number. In our lab the PID
numbers happened to be 1301, 1570, and 1980. You would enter the commands:
-Kill –9 1301
-Kill –9 1570
-Kill –9 1980
The lab would be easier if I were more familiar with the Linux system. Using a Chromebook
while working on the labs makes it more difficult because I do not have all the keys that other
computers have such as the function row. The lab was not necessarily complicated, it was more
about remembering all the commands that are complicated. However, I still believe that learning
all of this and doing hands-on activities is detrimental to my success in my future career.
