Understanding Cyberbullying and its Impact
SOC 1001 - Introduction to Sociology

Introduction
The social topic that I chose to write about is bullying, the Merriam
Webster dictionary defines it as: abuse and mistreatment of someone
vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful, etc.: prone to or
characterized by overbearing mistreatment and domination of others.
Ever since the beginning of society you can find various forms of
bullying; which both children and adults have experienced in many
different situations (from a fashion standpoint to a political matter and
everything in-between). Back in the 18th and 19th centuries it wasn’t a
common issue that people acknowledged and spoke on; as one’s
character, family background, community, and times bullying could
be subjectively perceived (Koo, 2007). The term itself has changed
overtime where once it was only considered if it was of physical or
verbal harassment in school children; today it also includes aggressive
behavior to any individual. As per the National Centre Against
Bullying there are four types of bullying which are the following:
•Physical bullying – this includes hitting, kicking, tripping,
pinching and pushing or damaging property. This causes short-
and long-term damage to the targeted person.
•Verbal bullying – this can be anywhere from name calling, insults,
teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal
abuse.
•Social bullying – or at times referred as covert bullying. This type
is done to harm someone’s social reputation / cause humiliation.
This can be in the form of spreading rumors, menacing or
contemptuous looks, playing nasty jokes, and having others
socially exclude an individual.

•Cyber bullying – is done through the use of computers, phones,
and other electronic devices and its purpose is to intentionally
inflict harm to a person. It can be done through different outlets
such as social media, instant messaging, texts, and other online
platforms.
As technological advancements have paved the way to easier and
faster methods of communication bullying has also seen a change on
how it can be done, where in the beginning there was only the in-
person method of bullying now there are so many outlets in which this
can occur. People are now able to reach multiple individuals with a
keystroke. This became a more prominent issue in the 2000’s as a
high school student killed herself after her boyfriend sent nude photos
of her to seven other high school students, a year later another case
with identical details was reported on as the 13-year-old also
committed suicide (Team, 2020). Cyberbullying has become
mainstream; it occurs on a variety of social media platforms and apps.
It happens as fast and easy as re-posting a picture or video which can
have terrible repercussions on the targeted person. The victims
become distant, depressed, and afraid of the actions of the predators
which most often has led to them taking their own lives and lives of
others. In 2010 there was a case in which a college student jumped
off a bridge after his roommate streamed a video of him kissing
another man, then there was the case of a teenage girl whom was
persuaded to send pictures of her breast and then blackmailed, which
led to her committing suicide. In 1999 there was a tragic case in
which two teenage boys shot and killed their classmates, allegedly
they were victims of bullying. This has brought to light how
lOMoARcPSD|61746433
technology advances so does the evolution of how bullying can
happen. Trying to bring awareness to this issue has become more
popular in recent years, the government has passed laws in hope to
lessen these types of bullying. Students are now made aware at an
early age about the dangers of the web and the type of information
that they shouldn’t share. Bark an online blog states it best;
technology conversation is ongoing and constantly evolving, and
speaking regularly about important issues like cyberbullying, sexting,
and online predation is important. It’s hard to predict if bullying will
ever be controlled, as time goes by and new technology is introduced
into society it is important that this issue be looked at over again to
include any new findings to this never-ending issue and new laws
could be passed in order to save lives.

faster methods of communication bullying has also seen a change on
how it can be done, where in the beginning there was only the in-
person method of bullying now there are so many outlets in which this
This has brought to light how
technology advances so does the evolution of how bullying can
happen. Trying to bring awareness to this issue has become more
popular in recent years, the government has passed laws in hope to

lessen these types of bullying. Students are now made aware at an
early age about the dangers of the web and the type of information
that they shouldn’t share. Bark an online blog states it best;
technology conversation is ongoing and constantly evolving, and
speaking regularly about important issues like cyberbullying, sexting,
and online predation is important. It’s hard to predict if bullying will
ever be controlled, as time goes by and new technology is introduced
into society it is important that this issue be looked at over again to
include any new findings to this never-ending issue and new laws
could be passed in order to save lives.

This has brought to light how
technology advances so does the evolution of how bullying can
happen. Trying to bring awareness to this issue has become more
popular in recent years, the government has passed laws in hope to
lessen these types of bullying. Students are now made aware at an
early age about the dangers of the web and the type of information
that they shouldn’t share. Bark an online blog states it best;
technology conversation is ongoing and constantly evolving, and
speaking regularly about important issues like cyberbullying, sexting,
and online predation is important. It’s hard to predict if bullying will
ever be controlled, as time goes by and new technology is introduced
into society it is important that this issue be looked at over again to

could be passed in order to save lives.
Cyberbullying has become

have terrible repercussions on the targeted person. The victims
become distant, depressed, and afraid of the actions of the predators
which most often has led to them taking their own lives and lives of
others. In 2010 there was a case in which a college student jumped

another man, then there was the case of a teenage girl whom was
persuaded to send pictures of her breast and then blackmailed, which

led to her committing suicide. In 1999 there was a tragic case in
which two teenage boys shot and killed their classmates, allegedly

technology advances so does the evolution of how bullying can
happen. Trying to bring awareness to this issue has become more
popular in recent years, the government has passed laws in hope to
lessen these types of bullying. Students are now made aware at an
