NUR 315 – Applied Healthcare Informatics

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Builds on previous knowledge of technology use in healthcare settings and facilitates development of
connections among concepts related to research, evidence-based practice, and healthcare informatics
and how they interface to impact healthcare delivery. Emphasis is placed on the concepts and issues
involved with technology use in today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment. It explores how
technology and informatics are designed to enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve
patient care delivery, and strengthen the nurse-patient relationship.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Describe trends in healthcare that have led to the increased use of information technology to
enhance individual health outcomes.
2. Determine the role of information and information technology as it applies to promoting safe,
caring, and effective patient outcomes.
3. Examine the use of informatics in nursing research and evidence-based practice.
4. Delineate the ethical and legal responsibilities of the nurse in relation to information systems,
including privacy, confidentiality, and security.
5. Employ healthcare informatics applications designed for the clinical practice of nursing in
simulated patient care.
6. Demonstrate the ability to be an effective user of healthcare informatics.
7. Examine the use of e-health and telehealth to deliver healthcare at a distance.
8. Delineate how the use of Personal Health Records (PHR) improves patient care and strengthens
the nurse-patient relationship.
