NUR 410 – Effective Principles of Interdisciplinary
Leadership and Management in Healthcare
Prerequisite: NUR 300: Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing Practice
NUR 310: Quality and Safety in Healthcare
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Explores leadership and management concepts, principles, and theories associated with healthcare
policy, advocacy, and regulation to advance leadership development. Builds upon previous coursework
by focusing on maintaining a culture of quality and safety. Also emphasizes the related leadership and
management contributions to quality and safety in healthcare environments. Learners explore formal and
informal leadership roles and responsibilities at various levels within the healthcare system. Applies
effective inter/intra-professional communication, collaboration, and application of professional values are
emphasized.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Analyze leadership roles using applicable theoretical knowledge from nursing and other
disciplines.
2. Assess personal growth as a nurse leader using professional standards and ethical principles.
3. Construct an interdisciplinary approach when analyzing leadership roles for diverse populations.
4. Examine the leadership strategies and practice environment necessary to create a culture of
quality and safety within healthcare systems.
5. Integrate current evidence-based research and information management resources to support
leadership decisions.
6. Distinguish among and defend leadership principles within health care practice scenarios.
7. Discuss the impact of leadership styles, including behaviors, skills, and strategies, and their
impact on health care management and nursing practice.
8. Recognize the impact of organizational culture and structure on the nurse leader’s role and
effective functioning.
