Explain some of the security risks associated with VPNs.
A virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private network that is created within
a public network to benefit from large networks’ economies of scale and
administrative capabilities. VPNs are commonly used by businesses to
establish wide-area networks that cover broad geographic regions, enable
site-to-site connections to branch offices, and allow mobile users to access
to their company’s LANs. When it comes to setting up a VPN network,
Network Managers have a lot of worries, especially for mobile/working
from home use. The primary source of worry is security-related dangers.
Many people who work from home, work from hotel, coffee shop, airport,
and must connect to a public network. This indicates that when users
connect to public networks, they risk exposing sensitive corporate
information to the public. If VPN and network security are not set
appropriately, intrusion attacks, DoS attacks, and a variety of other cyber
security threats may be introduced. Therefore, the network manager’s
first responsibility is to secure the VPN network and close any gaps in its
setup. Not only to increase the network’s security, but also to secure the
company’s precious data and other internal data-related assets.
Describe how organizations can mitigate these risks.
