7-1 Discussion: Factors of Emotional Intelligence
If you could pick only one factor of emotional intelligence to argue was the most important in a
professional setting, which of the following 4 factors would you pick and why?
Out of the emotional intelligence factors, I believe the most important in a professional setting is self-
regulation. We can see from the article that self-regulation requires an understanding of the individual’s
role, expectation in the organization, and controlling our actions/behaviors, which may be viewed as a
form of contradictory communication. Although this component could be the most difficult to attain
under difficult circumstances, exercising restraint and evaluating the situation might help prevent
communication sabotage (Nguyen et al. 2019, p. 57). This component, in my opinion, is the most crucial
since, in order to function effectively as a team, each member must first and foremost be aware of their
responsibilities and expectations to the team. The ability to control our actions is what I consider to be
the most crucial aspect. Not only will this ability improve our capacity for problem-solving but also aid in
maintaining effective communication.
What is one strategy you could employ to promote an increase of emotional intelligence related to
your selected factor? For example, would modeling the behavior you'd like to see be effective? Why
or why not?
One strategy that could be employed to promote an increase of emotional intelligence is that of
modelling behavior in which effective communication is promoted as well as behaviors and actions
needed to be an effective team member is promoted. For example, a team leader who promotes and
displays open communication and self-regulation in controlling their actions to effectively navigate
stressful situations with the other team members' collaboration. Team members then can model this
behavior, which will lead to more effective communication between employers and fellow co-workers
and improve their problem-solving abilities in stressful situations. This will then result in a stronger and
more effective collaborative team.
If you could sit down with any theorist covered in this course to discuss and debate your choice with,
who would it be and why?
