For this journal activity, you will focus on reconstructing your view of what it means to be abnormal.
Specifically, consider the notion of humanity in abnormality. Then respond to the following prompts
with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Address the rubric criteria listed below and support your answers
with a credible source when necessary. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the
relevant information.
Discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens.
To view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens advises us to avoid labeling
behaviors as abnormal or pathological and instead encourages us to realize that what may be
seen as abnormal in one setting could be completely normal in another. The non-pathologizing
perspective emphasizes the recognition of abnormal behavior's multifaceted nature. A
combination of genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and the individual’s unique life
experiences influence it.
In recent times, people have begun to adopt a non-clinical view of psychological conditions—as
differences, not disorders. Discuss the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits,
symptoms, and conditions in this manner.
Benefits of this perspective are that it reduces the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It
promotes diversity and advocates for a society that is more empathetic. It encourages less
discrimination against individuals based on their mental health state. The cost of this
perspective includes the potential of misinterpretation of behavior. It could potentially hinder
appropriate support. This perspective also poses the risk that comorbidities would be
overlooked.
Think of an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness. Discuss how
aspects of this behavior may be reframed and reapplied as a strength.
Social withdrawal can be viewed as a deficit as it can be misinterpreted as shyness or lack of
social skills. This can be reframed as a strength in several ways. An example would be that
individuals who withdrawal has more time for self-reflection and introspection. This leads to a
deeper understanding of oneself. These individuals also have fewer social distractions so they
may find it easier to concentrate better on more productive tasks. Social withdrawal can also be
used as protection against overwhelming social interactions which could reduce anxiety and
stress levels.
