POL 210 8-2 Discussion
I selected the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as my interest
organization because it is committed to promoting or opposing changes in public policy without
running for office (NAACP). They were founded in 1909 in New York City by a group of
activists of different races, making them the oldest and biggest civil rights organization in the
country at the time. Mary White Ovington, Henry Moskowitz, and W.E.B. Du Bois were among
the group of founders who were both black and white campaigners. When the United States
Supreme Court declared in Guinn v. In The United States that grandfather provisions were
illegal, the NAACP successfully challenged the statute and obtained a favorable ruling. Their
most important contribution to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and one of their
most significant successes was the 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education by the US
Supreme Court, which prohibited segregation in public schools. For instance, the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, which outlawed prejudice depending on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin,
and the Voting Right Act of 1965, which outlawed voter suppression because of race, were both
the result of effective lobbying. Because of the history of significant improvements to better
safeguard its residents, I think interest groups do have an impact on the election. Barack Obama,
the first black president, gave a speech in 2009 at a gathering honoring the NAACP's 100th
anniversary.
