My area of interest within the IT field focuses primarily on Health
Information. I have a lengthy history in medical billing and
reimbursement within the hospital and clinical settings. I have both a
love for technology and a passion to help others. I am excited to get
back into the hospital setting and put my expertise to work!
A Health Information Manager's role is to collect, analyze, and
protect the patient's medical records. The Health Information
Manager's (HIM) roles have grown since healthcare has become more
technology driven. Since medical records have transitioned from
paper to electronic the need for information technology has
increased. HIM are familiar with the legal aspects of health
information management. The HIM is proficient in information
governance management, clinical information assurance for safe
patient care, confidentiality and data protection assurance, corporate
information assurance, information security assurance and secondary
use assurance. Their roles include establishing rule and decision-
making rights for the valuation, creation, collection, analysis,
distribution, storage, use and control of information. They help with
the organization and implementation of policies, procedures,
structures, roles and responsibilities that outline and enforce rules of
engagement, decision rights and accountabilities for the effective
management of information assets. The HIM is very knowledgeable
with the electronic health record and its components. The medical
record is a legal document; therefore, accuracy is very important. The
integrity of clinical documentation is also significant. HIM are skillful
managers in reimbursement and revenue cycle management.
This is only the tip of the iceberg! With the constant changing of
technology, is the constant changing of the role of the Health
Information Manager.
