‘systemicallydevelopedstatementstoassistpractitionerandpatient

decisionsaboutappropriatehealthcareforspecificclinical

circumstances.’Theymayofferconciseinstructionsonwhich

diagnosticorscreeningteststoorder,howtoprovidemedicalor

surgicalservices,howlongpatientsshouldstayinhospital,orother

detailedclinicalpractice.”Basedonthisdefinitionofclinical

guidelines,weseethattherearealotoffactorstoconsiderwhen

discussingefficiency,primarily,testing,services,anddurationof

hospitalization.Oneargumentforthegovernmenttobeinacentral

positiontoissuephysicianpracticeguidelinesconsiderstheways

guidelinesmaybeinfluencedbyotherresourcesthatthey

governmentcanprovidethehealthcarefacility.

Heskett(2007)statesthatlimitingthegovernment’sinput

whenitcomestophysicianpracticeguidelinescanfurtherinfluence

theirinputand/orhelpinotherareasofhealthcare.One

disadvantageofnotpermittingthatresponsibilityisthatphysicians

maymissoutonopportunitiesfortechnologyadvancementwithin

theirpractice.Otheropportunitiesincludebeingprovidedwith

additionalresourcesthatcanimprovequalityofpatientcare.Such

resourcesarefundingformedicalequipment,informationtechnology

equipment,safetyequipment,orotherresourcesforhealth-related

programs(prevention,educationprograms,etc.).

Furthermore,accordingtotheMinnesotaDepartmentof

Health(n.d.)thegovernment’sinvolvementinsettingpractice

guidelinescanfurther“promotehealthcommunitiesandhealthy

communitybehaviors.”Theymaysetpracticeguidelinesthat

coincideorfacilitatecommunityengagementguidelinesand

practicesto“promotepositivehealth[while]preventingadverse

health”andotherhealthdisparities(MinnesotaDepartmentof

Health,n.d.).Havingthegovernmentregulateclinicalpractice

guidelinescanbeonestepinreducingcommunicationissues

betweenhealthcareprovidersandothercommunityhealthproviders,

allowingresourcestoflowevenlyandservicestofacilitateeach

otherfortoprovideoptimalpatientcare.
