Medicare, Medicaid, and the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) have significantly impacted the
healthcare industry. It is reported that the number of people receiving
Medicare 61.2 million people. Medicare covered 52.6 million people
age 65 and older with 8.7 million individuals on disability. (National
Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, n.d.). The
benefits that Medicare provided is more people can have access to
healthcare which can result in better health. With Medicare, chronic
disease such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma can be better
managed. With Medicare, people will not have to wait until they are
seriously ill to visit the doctor. All of those benefits that Medicare
provided can prevent or delay disease process.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
protect patient’s medical record. Healthcare providers cannot share
patient’s information to other healthcare workers do not involve in
the patient care. Under HIPAA, patients are allowed to get a copy of
their health records, they can have corrections added to their health
information and also file complaint if they believe their medical
record was use or share without their consent. (HHS, n.d.). One of the
disadvantages of HIPPA is that privacy rules does not stop hospital to
submit a claim to a patient insurance company without asking the
patient permission first. “That takes away your option of self-pay, or
more importantly, your decision to decide what claims you want
submitted to your insurance company “.(FinancialWeb,2018).
