Concept & Etiology: How does the disease affect the ear, nose, throat, and gastrointestinal systems
in particular? How does it deviate from the definition of health discussed in Module One?
Retinal detachment- The retina detaches and pulls away from eye tissues supporting it.
Retinal detachment deviates from health because it can cause permanent vision loss. The retina
senses light and send signals to the brain. If the retina is damaged, torn, or has a hole one can loss
their sight.
Classification:
Exudative- “due to accumulation or serous and/or haemorrhagic fluid in the sub retinal space
because of hydrostatic factors” (AADP, 2004)
Tractional- “occurs via centripetal mechanical forces on the retina, usually mediated by fibrotic
tissue resulting from previous hemorrhage, injury, surgery, infection, or inflammation” (AAFP, 2004)
Rhegmatogenous- occurs when a tear in the retina leads to fluid accumulation
Clinical Manifestations:
Symptoms
Blurred vision
Flashes of lights
Floaters
Darkening vision
Signs
Hole in retina
Tears in retina
Diagnostic Tests:
Eye examination
Eye ultrasound
Electroretinogram- measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to a light stimulus
Fluorescein angiography- uses special dye and camera to look at blood flow in the retina and
choroid
Intraocular pressure measurement- measurement of fluid pressure inside the eye
Ophthalmoscopy- testing that allows doctors to see inside the back of the eye
Retinal photography- testing that provides colored images of the retina, optic nerve and blood
vessels in the back of the eye
