Concept and Etiology:
"Strabismusisadisorderinwhichbotheyesdonotlineupinthe
samedirection"(MedLinePlus,2021).Inotherwordstheydon'tlook
atthesamethingatthesametime.Therearesixmuscles
surroundingtheeyethatkeepbotheyesinplaceandfocusedonthe
samepoint.Withthisdisorderthemusclesarenotworkingcorrectly
andwhenoneeyefocusestheotherlooksawaytoanotherpoint.If
itgoesuntreatedtheeyethatstrugglestofocuswillenduplosing
sight.
Classification:
Strabismuscanbeclassifiedinanumberofdifferentways.Someof
themostprevalentareEsotropia,ExotropiaandHypertopia.
EsoptopiabeingwhentheeyeslookinginwardandExotopiabeing
whentheyeyeslookoutward.AndHypertropiadescribeseyesthat
aremisalignedvertically.Forexample,oneeyebeinghigherthanthe
other.
Clinical Manifestations:
Signsofthisdisorderwouldbefoundbyaphysicalexamination.The
disorderisapparentbylookingattheeyes.Itiscausedbyalossof
controlinthemusclessurroundingtheeye.Typicallywiththe
neuromuscularandbraincontroloftheeye.Symptomscaninclude
varyingdegreeofvisonloss,misalignedeyes,weakeyemovement.
Diagnostic Tests:
Thereareafewdifferenttypesofwaystotestforstrabismus.One
ofwhichbeingreflextests,likethetestinvolvinglookingdirectlyata
pointoflight.Prism'sarealsousedtoseeiftheeyesareproperly
aligned.
