I am a Gen-X’er and my childhood was the greatest pop culture. The music, clothing, and
movies of the 1980s are still referred to and imitated today. Pop culture is visible everywhere.
Our favorite music, novels, and television series, as well as articles and blog posts, all reflect
it. I feel like I have a good grasp on understanding pop culture. What has changed is how I can
find meaning throughout pop culture by looking at it through the various lenses. For example,
I wrote about Star Wars this term. I was so surprised when I began examining the franchise
under the different lenses. I believe the one that was the most interesting was when I viewed it
under the historical lens.
With the skills I’ve developed via critical analysis, I can take on big problems and break them
down into doable tasks and goals. This skill can be used for both minor team goals and everyday
tasks. This skill can be molded to fit a variety of obstacles including personal, academic, and
professional.
