The Rebranding of Sleep
The current wellness-related topic through the natural and
applied sciences lens I have chosen to discuss is “The Rebranding of
Sleep”. From 2010-present day, we as consumers have seen many
more sleep-aid, mattress, and sleep study
commercials/advertisements than any prior decade before. Sleep
doctors point to an influx of science highlighting the many important
ways consistently sleeping long enough is linked to better health.
(DiGuilio) One doctor even stated recently, that “There is
overwhelming scientific evidence that sleep quality and proper
timing of sleep are essential for brain, immune, cardiovascular, and
metabolic health.” (Phyllis Zee. Md.) There as also been an upshot of
sleep studies due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, and the surplus of time
that was spent at home to allow for such studies. One study in
particular, was for that of sleep apnea. Scientists and doctors even
found that having sleep apnea can increase the risk for dementia
(DiGuilio). Rebranding the reputation and importance of sleep is
something we see in our everyday lives. The grocery store pharmacy
aisle had just a handful of sleep aids 15 years ago. Now, if you walk
by this same aisle, you have a choice of at least 25 different options
to choose from. From Unisom to Zzzquil and beyond. The market has
grown due to the emphasis that has been seen through the natural
and applied sciences lens. Sleep became marketable due to the
studies about the importance of sleep. This is the value of The
Rebranding of Sleep, viewed through this lens.
