b An item I think relates to wellness would be "13 Reasons Why" by
Jay Asher. Hear me out! I know many people have mixed feelings on
this, but the book was amazing (The books are always better). the
synopsis is "You can’t stop the future. You can’t rewind the past. The
only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play. Clay Jensen returns
home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying
on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by
Hannah Bakerhis classmate and crushwho committed suicide two
weeks earlier. Hannah’s voice tells him that there are thirteen
reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he
listens, he’ll find out why. Clay spends the night crisscrossing his
town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to
Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words
throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever."
(2007, October 18).
b b This relates to wellness because it shows how these characters
go through trauma and many different types of assaults, it shows
how they try to handle the trauma, and how they change as a person
after the events. This story is very raw and definitely shows how
mental health is important and that it can change a person. Wellness
goes beyond just physical health. Mental health and spiritual health is
just as important as physical health. They all play a part in keeping
the body balanced.
b b This story (2007) and the Netflix series (2017) have both
contributed to social implications over the years. I read the book in
2010 and I could not put it down. In 2010, I was a teenager and I did
not ever hear about self harm nor any types of assaults or even talk
about mental health. It was not topic that were discussed when I was
growing up. Reading this story impacted my world in a positive way.
It brought awareness to me and helped me learn how to spot these
characteristics in people and how to treat them better and care for
them differently. Watching the series was just as good to me because
it brought it to life in the way I had imagined. The book was not
popular growing up, but the Netflix series had many controversies.
Many people did not like how graffic it was nor the topic. Many
people felt like it was promoting or making light of horrible
situations, but I feel it was bring light to situations that are not talked
about enough and can do real damage. The societal implications of
this story and series provided an avenue for there to be research
done on this type of trauma and self harm to help provide a useful
impact on society.
