Wellness expands beyond just physical health and encompasses eight
unique dimensions that impact an individual’s well-being: emotional,
environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and
spiritual (Garcia, 2015). Additionally, by analyzing topics through the
social sciences, humanities, history, and natural and applied sciences
lenses, I am able to make meaningful connections to how wellness
issues affect different groups, cultures, society, and institutions.
A potential implication of current discussions about wellness for the
future would be navigating how to maintain adequate social, emotional,
occupational, and physical wellness with the major changes resulting
from sicknesses. Our society has had to make many changes due to the
COVID-19 pandemic and now Monkeypox. A large percentage of the
population has shifted to working from home, which will inevitably
impact the occupational dimension of wellness. Also, people have been
keeping their distance from others and quarantining themselves to stop
the spread of these illnesses, resulting in harm to everyone’s social and
emotional dimensions of wellness. It will be interesting to see future
studies about how the last few years have impacted people’s well-
being.
My field of study is business administration, with a concentration on
human resource management. My plan is to transition into a Human
Resources (HR) role once completing my degree. Expanding upon my
ability to critically analyze topics, such as wellness, will be an invaluable
skill as an HR worker. HR’s focus and responsibility have considerably
shifted in the last couple of decades to meet the more strategic and
complex needs of modern-day businesses. A significant part of HR’s
responsibility is aligning strategic human resource initiatives with
business objectives. In order to adequately perform that function,
employees in an organization need to have their needs met.
Developing my critical analysis skills will be helpful as a strategic
partner to an organization. When a situation occurs that negatively
impacts an organization, HR needs to find solutions to resolve the
matter that is beneficial to employees and the company. Critical
analysis skills are impactful because they allow HR to fully understand
the situation, identify desired outcomes, and plan a process to correct
the problem (Currence, 2017). For instance, suppose an organization is
facing a high rate of employee turnover that is causing a financial
burden to a company due to lower production and increased training
costs. Much like the critical analysis I completed on my wellness topic,
HR would need to examine the various contributors leading to
employees leaving the organization to ensure they fully understand the
issue and can identify effective resolutions.
