Even with an extensive healthcare balance that allowed me to help improve the
overall health and wellness of people from all backgrounds, this course has helped
tremendously with understanding how the lens can be utilized to study the topic of
wellness. As shown throughout this class, overall wellness is closely tied with a person’s
surrounding community, culture, race, and socioeconomic status. These different
backgrounds create different perceptions of health behaviors and attitudes. Studying these
influences and wellness trends through the four lenses creates a strong foundation in how
to help improve the community's health.
Based on current trends, I do hope that the topic of wellness continues to be
discussed and implemented throughout society. If more people were aware or educated on
the importance of the eight dimensions of wellness and their connection to health and
wellbeing, they would be able to identify problem areas that can be addressed to improve
their state of being and lead happier lifestyles. The critical analysis skills this course
focused on over this term will be vital in my future career as a public health worker. It has
provided me with the skills needed to take a step back from an issue or case and look at all
angles objectively and analytically. Being able to study all sides of an issue will help me
to understand the different viewpoints and allows me to be more open-minded,
empathetic, and understanding of those who might come from a different cultural, racial,
or socioeconomic background than myself. This can then be applied to patient care and
will help create a safe environment for those from different cultural backgrounds.
