So the topic I chose is depression this is a perfect topic and looking at it
through the lens of social science is something that always needs to be
done. Depression a lot of time is often associated with social
interactions and how we develop. Depression affects many Americans
and cases have increased throughout the last few years as people feel
more isolated. The isolation has also brought on the anxiety that
triggers the depression and thoughts of loneliness but fear of going out.
For me understanding the social science lens has helped me with this
topic because it allows me to look more at general interactions. In the
video from Pinker (2017), she even mentions how the opportunity to
research how interactions are still something that needs to be
researched but in-person meetings and interactions are so much
greater than those online or virtually. This is very good for
understanding depression more and how social interactions
throughout the day can help or hurt those who are struggling. Social
media is another thing to continue to look at. Many people are spending
more time on social media rather than on real interactions.
I think looking at depression from all the different lenses has given me
more perspective on the overall subject. There is so much to be gained
from looking at all the reasons why and that can also help target other
ways to help learn more and what research can be done to improve the
understanding of depression. Very little is still known about the brain
and how everything fires and what causes certain issues. As we
continue to learn and take from the past we can improve for the future.
These lenses are all important to get an overall understanding or at least
a better understanding of depression and ways we can continue to
evaluate and treat depression.
