Holistic medicine is a current wellness issue that I feel is important to explain
to our current society. There has been a push for people to consider using
more natural and holistic approaches when it comes to overall wellness.
Understanding that our environment can impact how we feel. We can be
overstimulated, tired and stressed and this can cause our immune system to
get out of balance. Also the weather can impact how we manage our overall
well being. “Many ancient, traditional medical systems clearly recognize
these as major factors. Exaggerated or stifled human emotions--our
interpretations of and responses to, in excess and out of proportion to our
ability to recognize and deal with them--can be critical causes of weakening
our systems. (Garbacz, 2002). How we cope with this imbalance is what we
need to look at. Sometimes we need just good old fashioned sleep,
sometimes a little chamomile tea, or melatonin can get us the rest we need.
Balancing food and exercise also can provide us with a much needed stress
relief that can improve overall health. We need to look at our wellness in a
holistic approach and not always turn to traditional medicine when the cure
might be right in our own environment. Candles, oils and natural ingredients
can help balance our bodies.
This issue of holistic medicine has impacted my understanding of wellness
because we need to start to look at wellness as more than just feeling good
physically and look at it from a whole being approach. Before modern
medicine, people found natural remedies and ways to have good health and I
feel like we need to research those techniques and not always be quick to
take a pill
